Labatt Crystal was introduced to Ontario in the late 1800s as one of the first lagers brewed by Labatt. World-renowned Saaz hops are used to give this beer a clean, almost sweet taste which nicely balances the fuller body, higher bitterness and richer taste typically associated with traditional lagers.

Bottle. Colour - medium gold, clear, very little effervescence. Thin bubbly white head, no lacing. Aroma - wet cardboard, weak cereal grains, and a wisp of herbal hops. Mouthfeel - thin and watery, over carbonated. Flavour - sweet malt tones, and a bitter finish, but nothing hop related.

This beer has been around since time began, but I don't know anybody who drinks it. There was a marketing push in the mid 80s while I was finishing University but aside from that, the only time I think of it is when I scan the list at the beer store and pass it by. Recently, I actually stopped and ordered. I'll never make that mistake again. Looks and smells like Labatt Blue, but has a strong gamey flavour that makes it difficult to swallow.

I first tried this beer in the mid-80s when it was heavily marketed (June -September 1986). It was marketed at yuppies at the time. Today...I still see it in the odd beer store listing 100+ years after it first came out, so obviously it has a market. It is a golden coloured lager that pours nicely with little head. The aroma is hoppy, but not too hoppy. It has some body when compared to other Labatt products, which makes it a pleasant brew.

This is an Ontario beer that has been around forever. I remember my Dad and Uncles drinking it. According to a local brewery historian this was one of John S Labatt's experimental brews back in the late 1800. It was introduced to Ontario only and was a first attempt by a Canadian Brewer to offer a light lager. I have no way of telling how many changes it has undergone in Labatt's long corporate history but this is a pretty standard Canadian mega lager made in smaller quantities, it has a slightly different character. Presentation: Standard Canuck longneck twist top with lot code and date. Labels espouses a product that is "naturally aged, no preservatives, cool , clear, lager" Pours a crystal very clear dark straw color with a lively white 2 finger head that reduces quickly to a lace that hugs the side of the glass all the way though the drink. Highly effervescent. Slight aromas of boiled grains, veggies and hop, Starts crisp with hop twang - effervescence and a slight citrus hit then mellows to a sweeter malty mouth feel then finishes fairly clean with a lingering malt taste. It comes off as a lightly-hopped mostly-malt light lager with a lot of effervescence to give a peppery (slight citrus) character A standard Canadian lager without any really outstanding character but innocuous enough as a thirst quencher.

Been wanting to try this brew for quite a while now. Like Crown said, always remind me of white trash. Pours a golden colour with average carbonation. Decent head, but does not last long. Sweet malt nose and same goes for the mouth. Slight bitterness in there. Not bad swill, but probably is some other brew the Labatt's makes and puts it in these bottles.
