This one pours a dark, hazy, reddish-brown color with a moderate tan head. The aroma is sweet malts and molasses. The taste is very similar to raisins with a bit of a molasses flavor after. Quite tasty.

smooth, malty, and sweet, but thin and boring compared to the best of this style. still better than an average beer, but subpar for a barleywine. needs to be more complex (compelling?)

This is just what Lucifer ordered. I’m a slow learner to the Barleywines. Watch your posterior or these ales will kick you hard. Did I forget to mention these are best at room temperature. A deep ruby red brew with a tan-white head on pour. Very complex aroma and flavor with hints of fruit, yeast, malt and a bittering floral. The mouthfeel is dry as the alcohol hits every inch of the palate.

Bottled 27 JUN 07...Pours a dark amber color..Head was very thick, then creamy after a few seconds. Aroma was alcohol, dark fruits, butter scotch. Sweet in flavor...malts, little carbonation, bitter.

Pours with a deep, dark, amber tinged, brown color. As I was pouring the beer showed a brilliantly clear, dark amber red color as it streamed into my glass. The head is an initially two-finger thick, amber-hued, tan color. The aroma is rich and malty with notes of toasted grain, sweet toffee and caramel, a nice fruitiness, . The fruitiness is a mix of rich, concentrated fig notes, some raisin character, sweet currants, and even a touch of orange. The aroma is really quite malty and wonderful to contemplate.

The flavor is sweet and malty, with a medium body for a Barleywine. Hints of salty smoke combine with notes of toffee and caramelized fruit to give this beer quite a nice richness. It finishes with a not-to-shabby bitterness, that is noticeable and helps to balances the malt character, yet is definitely subservient to it. A touch (maybe just a wisp of a hint really) of bergamot, some hints of herbal notes and the bitterness in the finish is all that is noticeable from the hops.

I am always quite pleased to get my mouth wrapped around and English example of a Barleywine, while I ultimately prefer American versions, the subtle hops and malt focus of the English versions always seem to tickle my fancy. I really like the flavors that are just hinted at in this brew. The salty note in the finish, the wisp of peat smoke, the touch of roasted grain, it is these flavors that provide such a wonderful richness and depth to this beer.

Recommended by Heddy, and quite rightly! Nice looking beer.... Deep mahogany color, with a big foamy tan head with good retnetion, and a good amount of lacing. Aroma is deeply malty, and a hint of whisky-like alcohol is present. Full-bodied and chewy mouthfeel, and complex flavor of malt and honey. Sweet finish and a very tasty brew.

Strong, dark and handsome, this barleywine ale satisfies the senses with full bodied flavor and tongue tickling hops. Malty and fruity taste with what seems to be a hint of "cocoa" rather than chocolate. The aftertaste is slightly astringent but pleasant. And the logo on the label is a "devil"who seems to be wearing glasses.hmmm .. I will ponder the meaning of that as I sip the rest of this glass.

Aroma is sweet malts, subtle spices, and light caramel. Appearance is deep ruby red in color, khaki head with nice retention. Mouthfeel is really smooth, oily and velvety. Flavor was much of the same as the aroma. Sweet malt, subtle spiciness, light caramel with a nice (surprise) punch of English hops. Decent barleywine. It's widely available so it's worth getting it if you see it.

Hazy, a little ruddy, dark brown with very faint cap. Very sweet aromas from this brew, including plum, banana, bubblegum, and vanilla. The aroma is misleading, because after that the hop flavor is significantly more bitter than expected, yet with strong malt support. Very yeasty and smoky too, with a touch of grass or hay. Well balanced and tasty, this would be good with after dinner cheeses.
