Which is better, British or American ale? Realistically, this battle is one of microbes. An excellent ale was brewed, the batch was then split into two fermenters. This beer was fermented with a healthy yeast from a venerable British brewery. And so we have two different Pale Ales that were separated at birth, so to speak.

I've always felt that North American breweries need to try more English styles because the English styles tend to be better balanced than their American counterparts, especially when talking about the IPA and PA styles. This was an excellent take on the English Pale Ale. A golden-copper in colour with a caramel malt aroma and weak hops. Flavour is perfectly balanced between the malty sweetness and hoppish bitterness.

I'll give this one high marks because I simply do not like hoppy beers...and this one was pretty hoppy and I liked it. The hop taste hits you quick, but the citrusy accents keeps it from having that typical hoppy aftertaste that I don't particulary care for. Pretty complex taste for a pale ale...and for a pale ale, I have to give it two thumbs up.

I drank this in comparison with the UK PA at the brewpub. Victory was having a little contest between the two beers, in which the only difference was the yeast. This version was the better one in my opinion, though pretty similar in aroma and appearance. It had a much better mouthfeel and finish. More malt and caramel flavors, and better carbonation. Both had a nice thick head.

Poured a light hazy gold color with a small, sticky head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, sweet caramel and butterscotch malt, with a touch of dry straw as well. Sweet caramel maltiness at the forefront of the taste, followed by a nice hop bitterness with some toasted malt as well. Soft mouthfeel, this was definitely the winner of the Pale Ale contest, though still shouldn’t be Victory’s new flagship.
