In 1901, Maxim ale was introduced to the north east of England. In 1938, the beer was renamed Double Maxim. Over sixty years later this premium quality ale is still famous among discerning drinkers for its well-rounded flavour. Double Maxim is still brewed to exactly the same recipe and product specifications as it has been for over sixty years. Following extensive taste tests and trial brews, it is now brewed and packaged at Robinsons Brewery, a traditional family-owned ale brewer. All production and packaging is monitored closely by Jim Murray, the ex Vaux head brewer and he has been brewing Double Maxim since 1968!! He works closely with the team at Robinsons Brewery to ensure our precise product specification is achieved.

Cask@GBBF2010 (shared with FatPhil). Deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized creamy slightly off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramel malty with some slight mashlike sweetness. Flavour is quite similar along with some raisins, nutty and wooden notes. Also mild spices in the finish.

Medium brown color, small head. A medium bodied brown ale. Malty and mild flavor. Mild hops. Nice flavor. Lighter tasting English brown ale. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is dry. Aftertaste is malty and very slightly bitter. Finish is champagne like

Ex Vaux beer, now brewed by Robinsons for "The Double Maxim Beer Company Sunderland", website www.dmbc.co.uk . 550 ml bottle, straight from the fridge (= served too cold) at The Shipwrights, North Hylton, Sunderland. Deep brown colour, darker than Newcastle Brown. Decent head. Malty and nutty aroma and flavour, hints of toffee, low bitterness. Fuller flavour than NBA, but not remarkable.

Much better than Newcastle Brown, but that’s not saying much, in fact I don’t know why I mentioned it. It’s actually not bad; nutty, malty, slight metallic smell, reasonable taste of similar elements, plus a late slight hop finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Quite good.
