Pours medium brown with small, airy head. The aroma is rich and grainy; I note neither fruit or pepper scent, just smells like a nice amber. While the category is broad, spiced ale, I am reviewing this against other chili beers I've sampled and it is by far the best I've had. Smoking the chili (ie chipotle) adds a lot of depth of flavor. Ample malts and faint ripe fruit mingle with all that chili. You taste the pepper but it's not overwhelming at all. I enjoyed the hot lip effect after each sip. So far, I'm impressed with Piney River.
