From the breweries of Colorado and the Pacific Northwest comes the winter tradition of a hearty brown ale that finishes with a strong hoppy taste. Made with a blend of Crystal Malts, and balanced with Centennial and Columbus hops, the frostbite was aggressively brewed to warm the beer drinkers in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Even if it’s not cold where you are, you will certainly enjoy this distinctively bold ale.

Taps rich coffee sable with a thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Woody hops and hay dominate the aroma, but gladly share the olfactory stage with roast malt and a whisper of wheat. Flavor delivers woody hops, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle earthy and wheaty tones. Firm body has good strong fizz and leaves a hoppy and roasty/charred finish. Get bitten!

This is not an IPA and I don’t think the brewery considers it an IPA, but it is a very hoppy brown ale. The hops dominate the aroma with the aroma doing more of hinting at the bitterness in the flavor that showing the aroma of the actual hop. Very little of the citrus or pine character left. The flavor showcases the sweet, nuts and cocoa of the malt with the hops playing the supporting role of balancing the malt with a firm bitterness. Not bad at all. The dark brow body is topped by a pale khaki head that is sizeable and adds to the creaminess of the body.

Had a pint of this at the Marker 20 last week, while waiting for some of the local Hampton Roads locals’s to arrive. A new beer for me, that I’m reasonably glad crossed my path.
Dark mahogany-hued body, keeping in line what the appearance of so many other “Winter/Holiday/Christmas”-type beers, IMO. Rather peculiar-looking foam in the head that seemed to clump in semi-uniform patches.
A little underwelming in the nose – not much in the way of hops, or spices, or anything else, for that matter.
But while the aroma profile of this beer was a bit staid, the flavor seemed to take up the slack. Malt leading the way, with a nice sturdiness to this – nothing wishy-washy about this beer, that’s for sure. Nicely warming and filling, too. I would have preferred a bit more bitterness somewhere in the mix of things, but can’t honestly say that the beer was seriously lacking charm and grace with the hops more towards the background.
I’ve been a fan of the Cottonwood line of beers for a while now, and I’m glad to have had the opportunity to check out their Winter offering. Recommended.
