One of the brightest stars in a city filled with culinary treasures, Christopher Elbow has been hand-crafting masterpieces in chocolate for more than ten years. In that time the reputation of his artistic delicacies has spread around the globe. Elbow’s sweets are distinguished by their use of unusual and sometimes surprising flavors and ingredients; in that adventurous spirit we joined forces to bring you a very special Chocolate Ale. Chocolate Ale is full of surprises, beginning with a glowing amber hue. The aroma is given over to earthy, fruity cocoa, with just a hint of hops. Smooth layers of dark chocolate intertwine with threads of caramel, vanilla, and nutty malt as the flavor warms and rounds to a bittersweet finish.

Definitely not what I was expecting. I don't know why, but I thought it would be darker brown like chocolate? Anyway, poured a fizzy white head with an aroma of fruit (I almost thought it was the wrong beer at first!), slightly sour, chocolate and vanilla. It's a nicely flavored beer, but it has a weak finish, average body, and nothing unusual going on other than being pale for a chocolate beer.

Pours out a deep very cloudy color with a massive head. The smell is all raspberry and smell great. The mouthfeel is thick but not heavy. The taste is just a little sour but not bitter. Very close in taste to Founders Blushing Monk.

Pours a nice clear amber, bit of an eggshell head. Typically malty aroma has an overtone of chocolate. Beany chocolate really comes through in the flavor, supported by malty and bready notes. Texture is creamy and smooth with some good fizz. Like chocolate and ales? Look for it.

Pours cloudy, medium-brown with scattered head. Aroma was musty with faint chocolate notes. Chocolate was faint in the flavor as well, some vanilla present. Overall, sweetly boring. A watery, medium body, undercarbonated. This one is a disappointment.

First off, this tastes nothing like it looks. Pour is clear, dark amber with very little head--not what I would expect a chocolate beer to look like. Delicious chocolate candy bar aroma with just a hint of sourness. Same chocolate dominates the taste with a touch of hops yielding a bittersweet finish. Far and away the best chocolate beer I've ever had.

Sampled from bottle. The most memorable moment in sampling this beer was the extraordinary effort it took to open it. And that it wasn't a stout. Pours murky golden brown with a lasting head. Aroma of cocoa nibs and vegetables. Curious. Balanced and sour. A lactic type of sourness rather than Brett or roselare. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated. Unique... But not in the best way. (Amy says it smells like le Sueure canned peas. How's that for descriptive?)

Aroma: Chocolate, Vanilla, Maybe some pale ale aroma

Appearance:Pours a reddish light brown with a white head that did last

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a smooth finish and good carbonation

Flavor: Flavor for me was too mild at times with the chocolate. Some vanilla, yeast, maybe a hint of hop.

Overall: A for effort and I really enjoyed drinking it... Can't wait for next years to see what they do with it next.

Aroma was more subtle than I thought it would be, chocolate, vanilla, maybe a little coffee aroma in there. A nice thick tanish colored heat, huge amounts of lacing. Flavor is chocolate through and through with some vanilla in there as well. A fantastic beer for chocolate lovers! Well done Boulevard!

Wonderfully made, this beer showcases a high end chocolate theme all around while using a strong ale as a base in lieu of the expected stout styles. I couldn't imagine this being any better. Obtained via impromptu random trade at the Dark Lord Day 2011 festival. The chocolate is so rich and vibrant it takes over the beer and pleases the senses. Unlike any other chocolate themed beer to date and it deserves to be mentioned in the top tier.
