The Saint Benedictus Abbey of Achel is the first monastery to take up brewing in Belgium since 1931, and is one of only six Trappist breweries now operating there. This dark amber, flavorful beer is surprisingly refreshing at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining in the bottle.

Fizzed out of the bottle but died in the glass. Malty and spicy aroma. Flavour is fruity and spicy but i find it too sweet. Like eating a sugar sandwich. Medium smooth mouthfeel.Shape up monks. 3.5 on a good day.

Had a bottle at Pub Italia. Pours a huge foamy head with thick patchy lacing. Has a cloudy muddy amber appearance. Aromas of citrus and floral hops, malts and spices. Flavours of strong earthy type hops with spices, cloves with yeasty notes. Also herbal type hops. Full bodied, lively carbonation. Easy to drink. Pretty good stuff!

A recent find at the Ontario Liquor monopoly. It pours a deep brown colour with hits of red. The head is light brown, frothy, and lasts a while. There is caramel, brown sugar, yeast, and bread in the aroma. The flavour is a tad sweet with hints of caramel, roasted malt, and yeast.

Enjoyed at Brothers Beer Bistro in Ottawa, ON. Pours a hazy amber-brown colour with a beige head, decent retention and a creamy outside of sticky lace. Sweet aromas of fruits (dates mostly) and caramel malts. Belgian Ale yeast does come out with time. Apple taste with sweet malts giving caramel notes. A little bitterness in the finish creating some dryness, but very mild. Nutty hints with the yeast. The alcohol is well-hidden. Overall, starts off mild, but get much better as it breathes. Slightly on the sweet side, but good.

Pours a cloudy copper color with a massive mushroom cloud of a head. the head is 2 inches over the top of the glass and it is taking it's sweet ass time going down. Tons of carbonation and is dancing in the bottom of the glass. had to wait a while hoping the head will go down but it will not! I drank the head and now I can get the aroma. It is bready and yeasty but very light. Taste is fairly light but has some hints of metal, yeast, and light pepper notes. Finishes off perfect. This beer belongs in every fridge the Rochefort sisters are. Wonderful.

mostly caramel and a lot of dark fruit greet your nose. a little extra sweet in the flavor, though it finishes dry and spicy. Liked this just a touch better than the Extra (which I think was the more expensive by far). A little prickly, but not overly so. Nice lingering candy sugar/spice finish.

Funk and a slight skunk dominate this drink. I've had this from brown bottles, so the skunk taste (which also dominates the Achel Extra, which I have had from a green bottle) is apparently a part of its natural flavor, and not from improper bottle color. From sip to swallow, there's a sourness that just doesn't appeal to me. I can't say it's a quality brew, as other non-trappist Belgian brews outshine this one. Achel is, sadly, the bottom of the 7 authentic Trappist brewers on my personal list. Recommend only to those of you out to try all the trappist brews before you exit planet Earth.

Dark ruby red with brownish foam head. 8% can be tasted but doesn't have negative effect. Not too sweet with caramel traces. Nice beer, will drink again. (Velp 201204)

Thought this was a great belgian experience. Only detraction is that it looked like murky brown pond water in the glass, not pretty. Aroma was just perfect, classic dark fruits and a rich maltyness. The body was just fizzy enough to keep this from cloying and that made it very very easy to drink. Flavor is likewise very good and very classic with a nice crisp finish. One of my favorites of the genuine trappists.
