After 19 years brewing only one style of beer, Steam Whistle Brewing is adding a new member to the family. Steam Whistle has announced it will be adding a premium pale ale to join its pilsner, to hit store shelves across Canada later this month. Presented in a blue can — alongside the now-familiar green of the pilsner — the pale ale will be made according to the exacting standards of the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, just like the pilsner. In terms of the style of the beer, our pale ale is still easy to drink and crisp, but more hop forward than our pilsner. We will remain true to our standards of brewing a pure ale with no additives, preservatives or artificial foam enhancers.

Tall can from LCBO. Pours a fairly large foamy white head and has a light coppery appearance. Some soapy lace remains. Moderate carbonation. Aromas of grassy and herbal hops, some light citrus notes. Flavours are grassy, bready and cereal malt, very mild citrus notes. Slight drying mouthfeel. Not too bad.

Pours a clean amber colour with a golden hue. The frothy head is light-beige with average retention and some foamy patches. Mild hoppy nose with caramel malts undertone, all nicely balanced with grainy cereal notes. The taste shows that cereal malt with a little spiciness from the hops. The mouthfeel seems dry enough. Nothing too complex, and not a new school Pale Ale with lots of hops sticking out. Just an easy-drinking old school Pale Ale, with a tad more hop.

The beer pours a translucent reddish-gold colour with a generous white bubbly head which lasts a few minutes and provides decent lacing. Aroma is west coast hops (pine and citrus notes), grass, weak yeast, and some spices. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with average carbonation. They were going for crisp, they got crisp. The flavour is very pine forward, with notes of grapefruit not far behind. The finish is bitter. Maybe a bit too hoppy for a pale ale.
