Like ales of Northern England, this ale combines British Challenger hops and yeast, spring water, carastan and black patent malts for a robust malty character and a rich chestnut-coloured ale. 1998-Present: Brewed by Sleeman Malting and Brewing Company 1985-1998: Brewed by Upper Canada Brewing Company

I was a bit disappointed with this beer. It had a nice dark brown colored body and was presented in a brewer specific pint glass. As I drank the beer I was expecting a nice roasted flavor ale but instead got a thin, watery taste upfront followed by some roasted flavors and caramel afterwards. It was worth trying once but not twice.

A great refreshing beer. A nice dark brown colour with a small head. The aroma was nutty with caramel tones. The mouthfeel was thick and full-bodied with optimum carbonation. The taste was strong and nutty.....a beer drinker's beer!

Very nice beer, not great aroma-sort of malty, amazing colour, nice taste, almost chocolatey aftertaste, very smooth, i'd definately buy this again and again...

In bottle it's good, but on tap that beer is great...Dark red brown, nice head and great lacing...Sweetness and malty is a good definition i think, light and flavourful with just enough bitterness to realize thar your drinking a very good beer...

No date code on the plainish brown bottle.. some information in the back label about the ingredients. Poured a beautiful red-mahogany color with a smalish tan head...not much carbonation. I couldn't believe that there was so little definitive or distinct aroma....slight grassy hops and sweetish caramelized malt odors...nothing really striking. This beer defies a distinctive taste profile as it has so many flavors in common with all the other commercial brown ales out there: sweet mellow caramalt, grassy hop bitters, slightly nutty yeasty finish. A very good representation of this english brown ale style. Brown ales proliferate these days and here's another one...not great but OK

Not an easy beer to knock but one that couldnt quite make the cut for my taste. I am a huge fan of this style and had heard only great things about this beer. And while I felt it a little short of great, I could recognize what it was that others enjoyed: a slight chocolat afterthough, a light roasted undertone accompanied with the overshadow of different chewy, yummy malts. None of this though was pronouced enough for my liking. I have had so much better in many other dark ales that it only make this one seem inferiour. I would imagine however that with alittle tweaking this beer would have the potential to be one of the truly great (Canadian anyways) dark ales.

Nice looking medium-to-dark chestnut colour with some slight orange highlights. Dirty white head, with alright lacing. Very nice aroma with a little bit of everything from malts to sweet toffee. Average mouthfeel. Deep, dark taste, very malty and even somewhat smokey. A very well crafted ale.

Pretty good. Dark amber-brown color and poured a thick head which left lots of lacing on the glass. A rich malty, smoky flavor to it. Much richer than expected. Nice and a little warming (it was something like 5 degrees yesterday!).
