Things aren’t always what they seem, but not all deception is devious. Some illusions and misnomers lead to life’s most delightful surprises. Case in point-this beer, the yang to the yin that is the black India pale ale. Once revolutionary for its onyx appearance, it is now an accepted and beloved member of the India pale ale family tree. Thus we took the spirit of a dark brew-the time-honored stout-and applied a similar science of thought, brewing it to the golden-hued. That is what this experimental series and its latest creation are all about. Cocoa and coffee beans impart roastiness sans darkening to this brew, while flaked oats provide an enveloping mouthfeel. The result is a stout that looks more like a blonde, but is a raven beauty at heart.

Rated Dec. 2014. 22oz bomber pours with a clear deep gold to copper body that supports a thin near white head. The aroma offers an interesting mix of sweet malts, coffee, a bit of a light skinned sweet fruity ester note, a dash of chili peppers and then malt sweetened chocolate. Yes, interesting. The taste starts sweet with sugary malts, a firm dark roasted coffee note and then a pleasing thin mix of chili peppers and dark chocolate. As it warms the chili pepper sensation seems to grow. Interesting.

Comes out of tap clear amber with a decent buff head. Aroma had a strong coffee overtone, with subtle notes of roast malt and fruit. Flavor is mainly quality roast coffee plus pomme fruit and just a snip of malt. A "blonde stout"? Could be! Firm texture has good fizz and leaves a roast coffee and roast malt finish. Distinctive, surprising, right clever!

Well done with the disguise. White stout like head on a clear orangish body. Head retains and laces well. Milky coffee aroma. Odd flavour but does taste like a stout. Coffee dominates with chocolate a close second. There's some cocoa and a bit of pepper. Almost full chalky yet smooth mouthfeel. Looking forward to trying another in this series.

What in the wide world is this, it's labed as a imperial golden stout. The words imperial stout mean black brew to me. This is like drinking a clear Pepsi all the taste is there but no color. It pours out a clear dark gold color. The aroma is very faint. The mouthfeel is thick and rich. The taste is balanced and not one thing really stands out. However this is a very fine brew and reminds me of Lion imperial stout.
