For beer folks, Chico, CA, and New Glarus, WI, are must-see capitals on the U.S. brewing map, but getting between the two is no simple feat. There and Back is named for the planes, trains, and zeal needed to connect them. This classic English-style Bitter is a complex yet easy-drinking mix of toasty malt and a fruity, herbal hop flavor. New Glarus is fiercely loyal to its home state, growing to one of the largest breweries in the U.S. without selling a single drop outside of the borders of Wisconsin. With those local tastes in mind, New Glarus has perfected traditional German styles and invented masterful versions of complex and intense fruit beers featuring Wisconsin-grown ingredients.

Comes out of ye olde tap slightly hazy golden with a thick light tan head. Aroma is malty with a fruity undertone. Flavor has strong malty and fruity - apple and pear - notes plus a bit of woody hops. Mouthfeel is quite lively and sassy. Get into the Hobbit of enjoying this.

Sampled on 9/20/2014. This bitter pours a dark amber orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel malt, fruity and sweet, with some citrus. A medium bodied bitter. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy and citrusy. Good carbonation, nice balance. A nice bitter, semi-sweet caramel malts with some nice citrus and herbal hops. Very drinkable. Would make a decent session ale. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter

A bright, deep amber colored beer with a small, three fingered, soapy textured, tan-white head rising above. There's hang time in the head. A moderate ringlet and persistent cap are left. Light nose od caramel and grass. The grassy hops come forward in the tasting. The caramel sweetness of the malt provides a backbone. Full, creamy bodied.

12 oz bottle. Pours slightly hazy copper orange with a big rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass some.
The aroma is sweet nutty caramel malts with some fruit.
The flavor is sweet fruity caramel malt with some nuts and a dry grassy hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.
Overall, a decent bitter, better than most. -

Aroma subdued, more toasted malt than anything else. Little fruit. Amber color, decent hang time on the head. Flavor stands out a bit, especially for the style. Great balance of fruity hops and toast and caramel.

There is some decent flavor here, almost rated it an 8, but not quite that solid. Above average for the style, with that citrus hop kick that I'm finding on all of these Beer Camp collaborations...along with the bitter hops. I guess this is the twist that Sierra Nevada brings. Light caramel/brown in flavor and appearance. Bitters are not a style I usually prefer, but this is easy drinking and pretty good for certain dinner pairing.
