STYLE: Belgian Quadrupel ABV: 9.3% IBUs: 40 Trappist ales as we know them have a proud lineage dating back nearly a century. Rather than follow the footsteps of the monks who forged the quadrupel—the warmest and darkest of monastery offerings—we aimed to test its inherent makeup. In doing so, we added triticale, a hybrid grain combining the pleasant flavor of wheat with the elemental durability and spice of rye, to breathe new life into the malt bill. Because of this, this reimagined brew comes across differently than its classic Belgian predecessors, and beautifully so. Lower in sweetness, but rich with flavors mirroring dried fruit, it’s a modern interpretation of one of the most historically sacred styles on Earth.

Rated in July 2014. 22oz bomber pours with a clear amber body that has a rosy red hue and supports a thin light tan head. The aroma offers up dates, prunes, brown sugar and a bit of spicy clove to coriander notes. The taste is smooth and soft with some silky sweetness. I get dark sweet earthy dates, prunes and figs dredged in brown sugar. At the edges of the sweet dark fruity esters are mild spicy notes. This is a smooth rich supple Quad. Nice.

Aroma has malty sweetness, mild fruit and spice. Clear mahogany colour with a small head that leaves a bit of lacing. As it says, like a quad with all the dark fruit and malt sweetness. Some wood and perfumy. Rye spice comes through more as it warms. Alcohol is also present in taste and aroma. Nice beer but it is only a slight twist on the original style. Now i know what triticale is.

Pretty much as advertised here. Like a traditional quad, but replaces some of the boozy sweetness (though still a bit boozy) with extra spice (rye) and a drier finish. I liked it, but it's not a standout.

Pours a clear chestnut with a fairly thick buff head. Aroma has notes of banana, malt, caramel and - wet dog? Or is that yeast? Flavor has caramel, banana, horehound, earthy and nutty notes with snips of yeast and hops. No wet dogs, though. Texture is smooth, with average thickness but good fizz. Worth the "tribble" to find it!

A bold amber colored beer with a big sudsy textured light tan head rising above. There's great hang time on the head. A thick ringlet and persistent cap are left. A fruity nose. That same fruitiness with an intense grassiness and astringency from the high octane of the beer. Crisp and effervescent.
