She was a leather-clad priestess, a member of the upper class, and in the most northerly limits of Scandinavia her tomb guarded a recipe for millennia. In her day, before grape wine arrived from the Near East, alcoholic beverages were cocktails of sugar-rich ingredients like grain, fruit and honey. With help from biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern and Swedish brewery Nynashamns Angbryggeri, we've unearthed the secrets of her tart, complex grog, and we're sharing our modern interpretation with you.

At Rockwell Tavern & Grill, half pint. Light opaque amber, small foam. Light sour fruity aroma, same for taste. Light sour, fruity notes. (Houston 201501)

Been a long time since I had a Dogfish beer and today I find myself in their brewpub! A strong beer but very pleasant after a weekend at the beach. Some lacing on a golden beer. Sweetness coming thru with berries and honey but well balanced. A very nice beer.

A brackish amber colored beer with a big frothy yextured, off-white rising above. There’s some hang time in the head. A moderate ringlet and persistent cap. The nose knows hints of sweet berries, like cranberries with some slight herbal notes. The tasting follows suit in the sweetness of the cranberries, the herbalness, artness, sweet honey and some bready malts. Low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Just when I was getting quite tired of their ancient ales (brewed with honey!) they mixed things up a bit. Still a strong somewhat sweet ale. The honey is present, but done well. The mix of tart berries is quite nice. Initially, the herbal aspect is too, but it wears thin as the beer warms. Nice, unique brew that covers the 10% well, but still not worth the coin (this was a gift).

Pours a clear mahogany with a fairly thick light tan head. Aroma has a strong overtone do clove and caramel and horehound notes, plus a touch of fruit. Flavor is almost candy-like, but not overly sweet; caramel, clove, honey and sour berry notes all make an appearance. Firm, smooth texture has a good fizz to it, and leaves a finish with honey, cloves, cranberry and - must be lingonberry. Maybe a bit syrupy, but if you like unusual beers you should bark for this one.
