Introduced in 2005 Malts: Two-Row and Crystal Hops: Nugget and Cascade Description:Real IPA, as it was first brewed in the days of the British Empire, was not the carefully filtered brew that we call IPA today. The first IPA's were unfiltered and featured extra hops as a preservative for the long trip from England to the colony of India. Our traditional IPA is naturally carbonated, dry-hopped and unfiltered like the old days.

Part of their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a slight hazy golden colour with a frothy warm cap, good retention and foamy lace. Hoppy nose with notes of grapefruit and pine. Fruity taste with the citrus and mild bitterness creating some light dryness in the finish. A nice middle of the range IPA with a micro-feel.

Long Trail's plain ale was boring and plain so I hoped for something more from their IPA. Disappointed again. This isn't a bad beer for fans of English IPAs but even so, there is very little in the way of aroma or bitterness. Not for me.

This was a REALLY big beer for an IPA. Ringing in at 6.1%, this beer was a beast. This beer, while quite hoppy, tasted a tad to boozy to me. I actually preferred the DIPA - it is balanced better.

A very very well made IPA in the British style. This beer reminds me of the fantastic Youngs Special London Ale. No, not hop crazy. Floral hoppy aroma. Nicely balanced taste with a strong malt back bone. Try this ale, you will probably like it. Love it.

Bottle pour is a cloudy orange with a soapy white head. The aroma seems to denote a nicely balanced IPA - nice floral hops and rich malts. Very true to the traditional IPA style, the sweet malts are balanced nicely with a generous hop addition. The eartyness of the yeast is apparent. As far as IPAs go, non hop heads will love this one as it is more of an English style IPA, the hops aren't too aggressive. Personally, I like more hops, but this is drinkable.

I suspected, after the first sip, that this would get low ratings, under-rated I believe. Long Trail is trying to re-create an historical version of an original IPA. The result is much sweeter than one expects in an IPA, especially and American IPA (which this beer is NOT trying to be)an the consequence, no doubt, is a lower range of ratings. I wasn't around when India was a colony but I am willing to take Long Trails attempt at face value. The nose is fairly well hopped but crystal malt predominates. This beer is unfiltered and naturally carbonated resulting in a very nice white head with good retention and nice lace and a slightly cloudy body that is pale gold in color with a hint of amber. The mouth is very full for an IPA and slick and chewy, its a very nice mouth feel. Flavor...this beer is as sweet as the nose promises. The initial hops taste become overwhelmed by sweet malts, there is a taste of violets, the hops are piney not fruity but the malt is a bit fruity, there is an astringency to the finish. This beer wants to be served on the cold side. The balance goes all to hell as it warms. All in all a very interesting experiment and probably a very good brew to introduce to folks who have never had hops before providing they drink it fast! (this is turning out a 4, if I reviewed it only after it sat in the glass for 15 minutes it would be closer to 3, the floral tastes dissapear and the hops turn to skunk).

This poured a copper color with a white head. The aroma contains some perfume and citrus mainly oranges. The flavor is rather tame with more oranges showing through. Overall a pretty boring IPA but might work for some session drinking.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: It had a hazy golden color with a modest, slightly off white colored head. The head has very good retention as it hangs on well and leaves lots of cool white lace rings on the glass. Smell: The aroma has a slightly floral bouquet with solid citrus and pine notes in the nose. Taste/Mouth feel: There is a solid hop presence up front and throughout. It is not over the top or in your face bitter hops but it brings solid fruity citrus and piney to the overall character. The hops are tempered by a nice biscuity malt and dry earthy yeast that give it some balance and nice complexity. The finish is slow with dry yeast and hop flavors lingering a bit but not overstaying there welcome. The body has a good solid medium feel and hardy texture with average carbonation. Notes: Very well done in my humble opinion.

The unfiltered nature of this beer is quite apparent due to the cloudy pale amber color. Strong, flowery aroma. Powerful hop flavor with only moderate bitterness and a lingering aftertaste. Very drinkable.

A tastey brew from Long Trail. Pours a vibrant cloudy amber colour with a large white head, soft floral notes, and pine. Taste is moderately hopped, and generous in grapefruit and lime flavor.
