"Lordy, that's as red as the devil's britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil's Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil's Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland's twist on the great American IPA.

A dark orange appearance with a white head. The aroma contains some citrus, caramel, and cider-ish things. The flavor is somewhat bitter but also malty with a dry finish. I taste some caramel, grapefruit, and lemons. The hop character outweighs the malt in this one. Some herbal notes can be found. Overall this a nice one.

Comes out of the growler - crud, it fizzes like nobody's business, and when I finally get more beer than foam it's a lovely clear mahogany with a VERY thick and fluffy wheat head. Dang, you just look at the growler and it starts to fizz over. Strong and hoppy aroma has an apple overtone and notes of hay and citrus plus a hint of - cloves? Hoppy flavor is woody and scarcely bitter, quite fruity with equal parts apple and sour orange, subtly malty with a snip of cloves. Yes, that is cloves. Texture is thin and watery but has good fizz. A devil of a good IPA.

I would say this leans towards an East Coast IPA. On the malty side with a cloudy amberish appearance. I don't think it tastes much different than their Kashmir IPA....some extra malt perhaps and maybe a little more hops. Flavor is barely an 8, but figured 7 was a bit too low. In the end though, just an average IPA.

Ruddy amber with a very thin cap. Great citrus oil smell with a faint whiff of orange. Grapefruit oil in this flavor, some pine and tingle, but more balanced than the Kashmir IPA I tasted. The bold toasty backbone made this more interesting. A better IPA than I'd had in a bit. A great name too, worthy of the "Beer City." Good body, tiny carbonation barely tickles, nicely sticky.

On tap at Bearden Hill Fieldhouse. Light copper amber pour with a medium white head and some lacing. Citrus and light pine nose, earthy, clean with sweet malt balance. Flavor mimics the nose. Good, not great. Still tasty and refreshing.

A reddish amber colored beer with big frothy textured off whute head rising robustly above. Settles into light film and thick ringlet. Profile is citruc hops on a sweet bready base. Ligh, effervescent and refreshing.
