In early February, Bell’s Smitten Golden Rye Ale will be released on draft and in six-packs - just in time to help transition into warmer days. Coming in at 6% ABV, Smitten pours a hazy gold appearance. “This is the perfect beer to help brighten those gray winter days and help warm your heart,” said Laura Bell, Marketing Director for Bell’s Brewery, Inc. Drawn from one of Larry Bell’s oldest recipes, Smitten began as part of a series of rye beers at the Eccentric Café in downtown Kalamazoo, where a variety of new and old favorites are still brewed right next door at Bell’s original location. That series also included Black Rye, Rye Stout and Kal-Haven Ale. A combination of sharp citrus and resinous flavors from the Pacific Northwest hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt yield an interesting and refreshing take on the American Pale Ale. Formerly called Golden Rye Ale, Smitten is the first new regular bottle release since Oarsman Ale debuted as a year round offering in 2010.

Mild nose of rye malt and some grassy notes. Pours a thin head with moderate retention and some lace. Light copper body. Nice slick medium mouth on this with carbonation spot on. Superbly balanced which probably leads to a lot of downgrading here. Bells is a master balancing complex flavors. Malt and rye dominate the taste with a floral hops balance and a very dry finish but lingers and is slightly bitter. Extremely sessionable.

Pours a clear amber with a thick and fairly persistent buff head. Strong aroma has a firm rye component and a note of fresh hay. Sharp rye flavor has a fruity undertone, crisp and enjoyable if simple. Texture has average thickness and fizz. An enjoyable ale.

Pours cloudy golden orange with a very foamy light head. Has aroma of malt and hops. The mouthfeel is solid but has semi bitter notes. The flavor is well balanced but just a tad hoppy.

Deep clear gold with a thin cap that quickly dissolves to a ring. Aromas of grapefruit peel, yeast, and barely a trace of caramel. Quite bitter, but not without balance. The bitter seems to have three sources: hops, rye, and yeast, and this gives it a subtle complexity. Not my preference, too IPAish, but I respect that. Tingly, heavy, too much for food.

Bottle from PfoxyJohn. Slightly cloudy yellow golden color, white head, some lacing. Light pine and grapefruit aroma and flavor, underlying rye and malts, nice linger, easy to drink. Thanks John.

I have come to expect a lot more from Bell's than this. It's really not anything special in aroma or flavor and when you consider that this is the maker of Hopslam it just doesn't measure up. Too many winners from Bell's to pick this up again.

Straight 7's for this approachable ale from Bell's. Mild floral hops and grass quickly followed by a dry spicy rye accent. Juicy bitterness and very crisp. Clinging lace from a huge whity head atop a sparkling golden body. Appearance would have been an 8, but there were a lot of suspended particles within this beer. Semi-bitter balance, very drinkable.

Another great beer from Bells. Bright, light orange-golden colored. A big frothy textured, off white head rises above. Good hang time on that head. It settles eventually into a thick ringlet and light stickiness on side of glass. Spiciness of rye is in the nose as it is in the tasting, joining beautifully with floral and citriic hopes, appropriated taken down a step in intensity. Totally refreshing, crisp.

I very dry sharp rye. Nice golden color. the smell of malt is in the glass but the sharp dry rye overpowers it. If you like these this is for you but the main thing I liked about this one was the color.

I found this to be a pretty solid beer. Nothing really great stands out, but smooth and tasty...balanced well...good reprentation of the style. Cloudy golden-yellow appearance with some sediment, so seems unfiltered. Reminds me of a hoppier/citrusy unfiltered version of their Oberon. Started out with a single to sample first. Not sure I would want a 6-pack this right now, but would be great spring/summer beer (although this is only seasonal for now I think).
