12 Beers of the Apocalypse #4. Peste Chocolate Chili Ale will plague you with the rich flavors of cocoa, chilies, and cinnamon in a beer of 7.5% ABV. A blend of Peruvian cocoa, Ceylon cinnamon, and chipotle, guajillo, pasilla, and cayenne peppers make this beer a unique distraction from the approaching end of the world as we know it. Brewed with Pale, Munich, C-77 Crystal, and Chocolate malts with roasted flaked barley, and nominally bittered with Magnum, this is the fourth of our 12 Beers of the Apocolypse heralding the winding down of the Mayan calendar.

Strange that I wasn't feeling this one. New Belgium set the bar high for the choc/chili/cinnomon comco, and this beer falls well short of that one. similar components, but not the same end product. the spices/herbal aspect of the aroma especially is far too overpowering, and the chocolate is so subtle as to be a non-player. the complex chili flavor and a little heat do come on in the finish, which is the beers strong point, but the faults (lack of chocolate, thin) are a little greater than the strengths. ok, but nothing special.
