Samuel Adams Maple Pecan Porter

Dark brown pour with a medium white head. Minimal amount of lace on the glass. Chocolate and vanilla extract flavor. Hop finish with a bit of bread as well. Good but not great.

Borrowed this bottle from a BeerPal at the Super Football game. The name gave me high hopes, as did the fact that some small Sam Adams runs perform very well. I was disappointed. The thick and bubbly tan head on a clear dark brown body looked good. The aroma was sweet maple and hay on dusty wheat and lemon juice, which also seemed promising. The initial flavor was wet dog followed by a lovely dry maple nut finish. Fine carbonation and lots of lace but very wet and no body to speak of. Doesn't come across as a porter. The aroma and aftertaste are great, but the initial taste kills it. Just doesn't work overall.

A little on the thin side for mw, but not overly so. The body and flavor was light, though fairly complex. Sweetish malt, slight roast and chocolate. Definitely quaffable, which is what SA is good at. Would have liked more pecan, but that's hard to do. Only in the aftertaste. Pleasant brew, though.

Came in their Spring Thaw pack, purchased at Shaws in Montpelier, VT. Dark brown colour with a beautiful creamy beige head, good retention and very thick lacing. Roasted malt aromas with the maple syrup. Same for the taste, very well-blended not to be too sweet. The pecan nut comes in the aftertaste, creating a little tart. This is a nice flavoured beer for spring.

Pours a dark, barely translucent chocolate brown with a thick, fluffy and rather persistent light tan head. Aroma has a definite overtone of maple syrup, plus subtle roast malt and nutty tones. Delightful flavor has roast malt, maple syrup, earthy and subtle coffee notes, a hint of chocolate, a hint of molasses. Texture, though fizzy, lacks thickness. Overall, rather nice. Happy Bunny Day!

Found in the Spring sampler pack, picked up at Costco for $22.99 a case. Not bad. Aroma is definitely nutty, like crushed walnut/pecan shells. A touch of alcohol also shows up. Subtle maple syrup also makes an appearance as does a Tootsie Roll pop with just a bit of root beer. It smells kind of sweet too, but it doesn't come thru on the flavor.

I think with a bit more complexity and sweetness this beer would be great. Light sweetness brings out the maple/pecan flavors, but the porter notes are lacking a bit. It's a pretty simple beer and done well. No complaints.

Murky dark brown body with an amber tint, medium sized tan head and decent lacing. Thin body for the style with a balanced residual sweetness. Subtle pecan, chewy toffee, and a hint of maple. The pecan and maple are great accents, unfortunately the base porter is what is lacking in this offering.

Pours a dark brown/red with a nice tan head with nice lacing. To me it smells a little bit like teryaki Sauce. Looking past that it does carry aromas of chocolate. There is also a bit of maple, but I detect no pecan. The taste is coffee with some chocolate, but the finish shows signs of maple syrup and pecan with a bit of wood. It is a bit overly carbonated for this style of beer, but the mouthfeel definately gained some body from the addition of the maple syrup. Overall a decent enough brew.

I wanted to like this based on the ingredients and style, but was just too sweet for me. Also not as malty as I would prefer, so reminded me more of a darker-brown ale that tasted like an Olde Ale. A little upset because I loved their Honey Porter which I can't find anymore, and now have to wait for winter to get their Holiday Porter. Was hoping this would be a hit for me, but not a chocolatey porter that I would choose in the future.

Amazingly good, afraid it would be too sweet, not so. Pours deep red-brown-black depending on light. Slight head. Sweet maple, caramel aroma. Best warmed in a glass with hands to release aroma. Flavor is maple with a pronounced pecan flavor. Sweet in the front, slightly bitter, crisp flavor in the finish.
