Gose Beer Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There aren’t a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. That’s probably why they dubbed it “Verloren” or “lost” beer . (It’s Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt. A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it’s vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that’s full of flavors to discover. On tap @ Bearden Beer Market. Light hazy yellow with a small tight white head and cap, some lacing. Earthy light aroma and flavor, some brine and saltiness, hint of citrus zest, malts. Very easy to drink.

I always give props to Samuel Adams for sticking their neck out and trying different styles, breathing life into old styles or pushing the envelope into new ones. I've never had a gose before, so I'm rating this one purely on how I enjoyed it. And given it as a whole, it was lifeless. It had a few items going for it, but as an overall experience it was blah.
The beer starts out with a fresh french bread meets salty pool water kind of lemony nose, with caramel syrup. Flavor is fatty and muddled. There's some sweet caramel notes, a subtle briny touch..it just reminded me of an under-attenuated brown ale...kinda maybe more like a worty small beer, like the 2nd runnings of a big barleywine w/o any hops. Thanks for the attempt. I can see why the style died out. -

Sampled on 6/9/2012. This gose pours a slightly hazy orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, with a touch of salt and some orange. A medium bodied gose. The malts are fruity and sweet, with a touch of orange and orange peel. The hops are earthy. Decent balance. Nice carbonation. A touch salty and zesty, but mostly fruity and sweet. Very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Malty aroma has firm fruity and yeasty notes. It pours a clear golden amber with a fairly thick, if not too persistent, off-white head. Flavor has a malty core with subtle notes of apple and banana and a hoppy, but not bitter, undertone. Or is that coriander? I get a touch of that. Salt? Well, a teeny bit of salt. Salt in beer? That's the most unheard-of thing I've ever heard. Ha ha. (Or tasted.) OK, enough being a wisenheimer. Smooth texture has firm body and a fair bit of fizz, leaving a rather persistent tingle on the lips and tongue. I hope that Samuel Adams keeps us this series.

I really dug this beer as a summer brew. Light on the palate but exploding with fruity and unique flavors (really like the salty aftertaste). Coriander and citrus in equal measure, light hopping. Just a nice enjoyable brew. So far the SA 22's have been legit.

The beer pours a golden/orange hazy color with about an inch and a half off-white frothy head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. The aroma is nice, it smells of lemon peel, coriander and some grainy malt. The citrus and coriander flavors come first, and then after a little while the mineral/salty flavor comes in on the back end. It's smooth and goes down easy.Overall I think it's an interesting spin on a wheat beer.

Well that's a bummer, but I'm sure he'll come out at some point. He got himself in there, I'm sure he'll get himself out. Or he won't, and he'll die in there and you'll have a dead cat smell for a while but listen, I'm going to help you out of that jam: we'll open the windows and get some scented candles going, maybe get a big fan going in here, maybe he'll decompose and everything will be fine. Boom! That's what it's like to have a sidekick. Helped you out of a jam.
