Urkontinent is a social collaboration of worldwide proportions. The seed was planted when Dogfish Head asked beer-‐loving tech types around the globe to suggest ingredients for a new off-‐centered ale. A small team from the brewery (and a few of our beer-‐loving tech friends) then narrowed the list to five: wattleseed from Australia, toasted amaranth from South America, rooibos tea from Africa, myrica gale from Europe and honey from the United States. The name Urkontinent, a German word for the theory that all of the continents were once connected, is a shoutout to the worldly recipe and ideas that make up this beer. The careful combination of ingredients gives this Belgian dubbel complex coffee and chocolate-covered cherry notes. “Urkontinent is a valentine to boot-‐strapping creative entrepreneurs in all kinds of industries all over the world,” says Dogfish Head Founder and President Sam Calagione. Eyed this just chillin .. . pours a deep amber .. medium head, great brussels .. . the spices are subtle and well balanced, just wanted a bit more of the rooibos .. . much better than Pangea .. . . I'd hate to be a dragon, I'd get so angry trying to blow out my birthday candles.

Sampled on 5/5/2012. This specialty grain ale pours a medium dark brown color from the tap. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is dark fruit, chocolate, roasty, and spicy. A medium bodied specialty beer. The malts are fruity, chocolate and roasty. The hops are herbal and earthy. A complex beer, there are a lot of flavors going on here. Candi sugar, chocolate, some honey, dark fruits and a whole bunch of spices that I can’t really identify. Interesting beer, the complex flavors do not seem to clash as much as one would expect. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is a touch dry and sweet.

Malty aroma has fruity and caramel notes and a hint of cloves. It pours a semi-transparent dark cinnamon brown with a respectable light tan head. Flavor has a nice mix of malt, fruit, cloves, cinnamon and yeast. Smooth texture has firm body, if not a whole lot of fizz. From the name I get the impression that this is the successor to Pangaea. Whatever, it's one tasty beer!

DFHs description says dubbel, but this seems more like a belgianesque porter to me. Pretty nice brew. Belgian yeasty spice is there, but subtle...some fruitiness, and lots of dry roast. Finishes dry too. Feel is nice. Gladly, the honey is slight as well and not overdone. Nice job!
