At Goose Island our brewers take every opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and aging techniques. For this edition of Bourbon County Brand Stout, they aged the classic recipe in rye whiskey barrels with raspberries and blackberries from Michigan. The result is a powerfully rich beer with notes of tart fruit and jam that fade into the warm spice of a fine rye whiskey.

This is by far the best of the Bourbon County series I’ve had to date.I can definitely taste the flavor of the berries. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a perfect rating. Is the mouthfeel is not as think as I like to enjoy.

Taps dark chocolate with a minimal buff head. Aroma yields roast malt, bourbon and sweet berry. Flavor presents sweey and slightly tart blackberry, roast malt, bourbon and woody tones, a bit of chocolate on the back end. Texture offers fair body and lively fizz. Dare the brambles!

I was not expecting this much of a berry presence, but it sure sent this beer through the roof. Dark brown body with amber edges, dark tan head and lacing. Smooth and sweet with a backdrop of dry roast and rye. Layers of rich, dark berries followed by vanilla, spices and wood. A splash of bourbon and cocoa sprinkled with a dollop of coffee. Medium to heavy bodied and on the sweet side, but the dryness from the rye helps keep the balance. Great creation in the Bourbon County lineup.

I don't know if I can write accurately about the awesomeness that was this beer. There are good beers, great beers, beers so good you have to share, and then ocassionally, beers SO good, you want to hoard them all to yourself. I didn't do that, but I milked my quarter bomber for all it was worth and was very sad to see it go. I returned my nose to the bottle a few times throughout the night as well. I was looking forward to the rye presence in the beer, but a little apprehensive about the fruit in addition to the different barrels. My worries were baseless. Perfect balance in both the complex aroma and complex flavor of raspberries and blackberries, slightly sweet and ever so slightly tart, spicy rye and whiskey, and vanilla, chocolate, roast, and a hint of coffee from the stout. This beer was amazing in every way. Sad that it's such a pain in the arse to get, but damn I'm glad I got this one, and I hope they make this again. Rivals the far more expensive BCS Rare as the best in the line.
