Since its arrival in 1997, our Storm King Stout has enticed folks to “discover the dark intrigue” as its label suggests. While enjoying that great imperial stout, we have been intrigued by the myriad of flavors it exhibits, and encouraged to test the limits of perception and pleasure by adding to the rich experience of Storm King Stout. So here you have such a exploration, involving Storm King Stout aged in oak barrels that once matured Kentucky bourbon. Blended to perfection, this one is surely dark and intriguing!

I've had this one three times (2011 release) but all were in large tastings so I wanted to open one with age to see how it's done. Cork and caged 750 split into two snifters. The pour is beautifully dark with a which brownish/white head. The only discernable aroma to my nose is vanilla, which is very exciting. The mouthfeel is thin, not unlike regular storm king. The taste is interesting, but not necessarily in a bad way. Upfront, the hops from the base beer smack around my palate, leaving it wrecked for the pleasant oaky vanilla and alcohol burn from the barrel. I like this beer quite a bit, but not moreso than other BA stouts. Kudos to Victory for trying something different in the barrel aged realm, but the hoppiness of the base beer doesn't quite meld with the barrel treatment.

750ml bottle, graciously shared by Lee, thanks buddy!! .. . pours a deep black .. light head, medium lacing .. . touches of bourbon, light oak, lots of tar, and a bit of roast .. . slick mouthfeel, quite light for storm king, the barreling has mellowed this out quite a lot .. . . Then how do you know there wasn't a baker under your bed?

750ml bottle, bottled on 11/10/11. Pours black-brown with a medium creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet dark fruits, chocolate malts, some alcoholic bourbon and a bit of cardboard.
The flavor is sweet dark fruits with a lot of roasted malt and a strong alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, it seems a bit young and harsh. It's not very well balanced - overly sweet and alcoholic. -

black with thin brown head. medium bodied, well carbonated, maybe a touch too much for the style, but that was expected...Storm King is the same. The difference between this and most other BB stouts is that the hops still come through, though the bourbony vanilla flavor and aroma are up front and center as well. chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, hops...nicely blended. a white whale since it came out that did not disappoint. 2010 batch. not quite with the very elite of the style, but not too far off, either. 2nd fresher batch needs to age a bit.
