On a recent trip through Belgium visiting the monastery breweries, we discovered an excellent barrel aged ale that had an incredibly satisfying flavor combination. Aging in oak barrels added a memorable richness, that we seek to achieve with this barrel aged Belgian-style barley wine-style ale. Being the ideal celebration beer to release on our 5-year anniversary, Barrel Aged Naked Evil is fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts and aged in whiskey barrels for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.

I love the combo of Belgian dark fruits and barleywine caramel sweetness, really works good together. A reddish hue in an orange beer with only a thin head and a slight unfiltered looking haze. Smells very sweet, touches of sugar, caramel and booze. Flavor is almost peachy, thick sweetness and a slight burn. Perfect after dinner or maybe on a sub zero day as well.

Bottle poured into a snifter at cellar tempearture. Brownish/red appearance with a lacy thin burst of carbonation. Belgian yeast dominates the aroma, fruity and musty with just a tinge of whiskey. The mouthfeel is strongly carbonated yet thin but doesn't detract from the beer. The taste is sweet up front, candied sugar, plums and raisins give way to vanilla and oak. I think this would be too sweet non-barrel aged, so the whiskey really helps balance the loads of Belgian candy sugar present. This likely will be amazing with a few years on it, it's a tad raw but still a really enjoyable beer. It's also quite unique - a Belgian bourbon barrel aged barleywine. Hoppin Frog churns out amazing brews.

Fantastic freakin' brew from Kinger, sampled recently at the BBQ Hootenanny that Lou so graciously hosted. The next 10 or so brews will be from that event. Pours a cloudy, bright orange with a quick rising white head. Aroma has subtle but noticeable booze, maybe brandy, raisin and hops on the nose. Taste is delicious. Full and firm, not over-boozey, just perfect in fact. Flavors of honey, molasses, raisins again and caramel. Thanks Cory for this wonderful treat!

Thanks to kinger for bringing this beauty to Blues, BBQ and Beer Hootenanny. We tried this one around 1:00 pm, 11/5 right after polishing off a growler of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. Poured a mellow clear amber tea brown with a medium frothy head and good lacing. Big sweet malty nose upfront with ripe fruits, oaken vanilla, a hint of whiskey, earthy hops, some alcohol, spices and yeasts - LOTS going on. Taste is big also; a real sipper: sweet ripe fruits, ample sweet maltiness, nice oaken vanilla, very slight whiskey, yeats and a nice hops presence to offset the sweetness. Epically huge beer - great way to START our serious tasting for the day. Thank you Cory for bringing this behemoth.

Recent 5th anniversary release from Fred and the gang. I've been fortunate to have a handful of samples before and after the official release. Pours a nice clear amber brown with a large foamy head and thick lacing. Very aromatic with sweet malts, dried fruits, and spicy yeast. Full bodied and well blended for an amazing smoothness. Drinks wonderfully and is such a pleasure to sip on. The barrel aging really pulls through in the flavor and adds an exceptional depth to an already complex beer. Raisins, fruity yeast, mild spices, oat bran, brandy, vanilla, wood and a splash of bourbon.
