A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Saison brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Saison is complex and contemplative-but also refreshingly dry and drinkable. With earthy and spicy aromas, this rustic Saison has note of green grass and a faint citrus tang. The body is light and layered with fruit and spice accents and a dry, peppery finish. A portion of the proceedsfrom this ale go toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Oliva chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plan crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Comes out of tap hazy apricot golden with a substantial creamy eggshell head. Aroma has strong notes of banana, pear, yeast and butterscotch with a peep of malt. Pleasing flavor starts with banana and adds pear, malt, yeast and subtle butterscotch to the mix. It is fairly sweet, but not too sweet for a good beer. Firm, viscous texture has a strong and persistent fizz - you can feel it going down the hatch. Go bananas!

Starting to get in to saisons. I like the smoothness and cleanliness. Earthy/Grassy flavors..something lighter for a change, from the malty and hoppy stuff. Tasting the mild fruit as well. Got on clearance for $5, otherwise I probably would not have thought worth the full price....but it actually is a decent sharing brew. Nice representation of this style.

Saison and SN, Wow! Opened to a very spiced mix of citrus and coriander almost. In the Glass, nice head that lasted and the color was a clean gold hue. In the mouth it was a bit sour and then opened to a nice bouquet of peppery notes and fruit. It didnt go well with Chicken Parmesan but thats ok i thought it was complex and robust. Easy drinking

The appearance is a golden color with a white head. Aroma is faint citrus and spice. Flavor is very nice sour with some lemon and orange. Herbal notes going on as well. Overall a good job for a cali brewer doing a saison.

again, the Ovila series nails the style. i knew i had really liked the dubbel, but this one still stood out...beat Green Flash easily head to head. bready and fruity up front, dry and spicy in the finish. this is what i think of when i think of the style. medium bodied and lively. great job again guys.

Had near the end of a tasting, it hit the spot! .. . hazy yellow gold, medium head, great cloudy lacing .. . aspirin, citrus, and herbs mostly, nicely balanced and easy to drink .. . light bubbles on the tongue, i enjoyed this brew, and a well made american example of the style .. . Oh, they don't work on me. That's why they call me Red. I'm immune!

Sampled on 7/16/2011. This saison pours a slightly hazy orange gold color from a 750ml corked and caged bottle. Medium to large sized thick white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is fruity and sweet, citrusy and earthy. A medium bodied saison. The malts are fruity, earthy and sweet. Hint of peaches and oranges with some banana and black pepper. The hops are herbal and earthy. Lively, but soft carbonation. Very smooth taste. Nice balance. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
