Brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s unique recipe for Brekle’s Brown—a tip of the hat to our first brewmaster—looks to both the past and the future. Mark’s special blend of roasted malts, inspired by the all-malt brown ales in Anchor’s brewing archives, gives Brekle’s Brown its coppery brown color and its unusual depth of flavor—richness and complexity without heaviness. For brewing and dry hopping, Mark has chosen a single, American hop variety called Citra. The subtly entrancing flavors and aromas of this distinctive new hop perfectly complement the unique maltiness of Brekle’s Brown.

Brown with a small white head. Aroma is very malty, golden syrup and toffee also with some resiny hops. Taste is very malty almost sour, nice subtle bitterness too. Medium with medium carb.

Aroma has strong fruity, floral, caramel, horehound and hoppy notes. It pours a clear mahogany with a fairly thick and fluffy pale tan head that leaves some decent lacing. Flavor has a nice mixture of caramel, fruit, malt and herbs, rather lip-smacking. Smooth, firm-bodied texture has some fizz and leaves a fruity, malty, slightly hoppy, slightly syrupy and slightly floral finish. Recommended!

355 ml capped bottle. Poured in the original Anchor Brewing shaker pint glass a clear and burgundy-brown coloured B A with a one finger tan, fine and pillowy foamy head that had a no end retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. Good lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, caramel, attractive aromatic hops, fruity, mango, lychees, pineapples, raisins, plums, vinous notes. The flavour is a huge hoppy bitterness on a solid roasted malts backbone, caramel, riped dark fruits, plums, raisins. The mouthfeel is light crispy, thick, sweety, fulled and strong hoppy bitter. This full bodied Brown Ale has a lingering hoppy bitter finish. A two faces, with a high fruity smell and a strong bitter palate, and quite impressive Brown Ale from "The" mythical brewery in San Francisco. I enjoyed it.

Pours a dark gold brown color full of bubbles with a thick tan head. You can instantly smell the hops. The mouthfeel delivers a instant whack in the mouth of dry bitterness from the hops. But low and behold after three drinks and it warmed up a bit it smoothed out to deliver. A decent coffee and malt taste.

A bold mahogany colored beer with a three finger fluffy textured, off white head rising briefly above. There's no lacing. Citric, molassess nose. More of the same in the tasting. Interesting. Medium bodied and effervescent enough

allllllllllright???? .. when i first heard of this, i really wanted to try this- but now thats its open and in front of me, not to happy .. . odd smell, like berry and old raisins .. . medium headring .. light lacing .. . hank hill is such a bitch .. . light mouth, good in that sense .. . some molasses, light berry skin, and a slight offness- not good .. . this was a huge letdown .. . i know anchor as being not spectacular at anything but always solid- this was crap .. . . I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

Quality made, but very timid in taste and appearance. The fact that one of their oldest brews, Anchor Porter, is just way better than this, well... just get the porter, of course! But, this is apparently based on an age old recipe that pays respect to the original SF brewmaster, Gottlieb Brekle. So go for it if you want to ahem... pay your respects. But Anchor Porter exists, so that's what you should be drinking :)

Obtained from slowrunner in recent trade. Big cool 22 oz bottle; true medium brown pour, mostly clear, near perfect cream head, very nice lacing. Pleasant malty aroma, a hint of fruits, slightly nutty, some Ovaltine, adequate hops presence too - nice nose overall. Taste is what is expected from a brown, and spot on for the style except a tad hoppier than some, Anchor-style quality, top notch stuff. Malty, Ovaltine-ish, slightly fruity, some nuttiness, then a good dose of citrus hops with a light lingering bitter. A very good brown indeed. Thanks Chris for this Wish List item - not available around Tennessee... yet.

Flavor here is probably more like 7.5....but just couldn't rate it an 8 here. Overall not quite an 8 either. Better than the average brown. Noticing a lot of the Anchors have the same base flavor and feel. Seems like a maltier version of Anchor Steam, but not quite as creamy of a texture. I like pretty much everything I tried in the Anchor family, so was curious to try this. There are better brown ales out there, and prefer Anchor Porter or Steam over this....worth the try though.

This is one of the best brown ales. Maybe a little more hoppy than I would expect, but other than that it's great. Pour is fantasic. Perfect thickness and a great head. I taste grain, pencil lead, bananas and hops. Yum! I will enjoy this beer as often as possible. Perfect representation of the style except for the hops!
