A tribute beer brewed to honor the memory of our fallen solider, Columbus (a brewery kitten we knicknamed Mongo), who used each of his 9 lives in a short – but brazen – 10 months on this planet. Let’s just say the little dude lived a hard life. Only, he wasn’t so little. In fact, he was the largest of five kittens born at the brewery in 2009. Mongo was so large in fact that his brothers and sisters kicked him out of the litter. I told you dude had it rough.

Super smooth. Would never guess this is double. Pours thick and hazy gold. More malt than hops in the aroma. Taste is malty and mild. Some hops. No alcohol. Super smooth.

Aroma is richly hoppy and has a strong evergreen component. It pours a hazy golden amber with a nice cream-yellow head. Richly hoppy flavor has an undertone of orange and lime. Mouthfeel is smooth, lively and tingly. Definitely worth hunting down!

Dark orange pour with a big white head. Bomber purchased from Family Beer and Liquor in East Dubuque, IL. Aroma is clearly piney hops and citrus dominated. Nice citrus hop flavor with a small amount of malt sweetness to balance it out. The ABV of 8.5% come in to play the longer my glass set, the warming in the throat with about half a glass left. Very smooth and enjoyable!

Murky orange with a white head. Aroma contains some oranges, apricot, pineapple, very floral. The flavor is slightly bitter with tons of citrus and tropical fruit. Some sweetness in the finish. Overall a nice summer bier.

    22oz bottle -

Finally found and popped open my bomber of Mongo. A nice IIPA for sure, but far from the top of the hop heap. The beer pours out a golden orange color with an initial large 3" head, with nice lasting puffiness, but little lacing. Aroma had a nice showing of pineapple/honey sweetness, with a light zip of piney hops. The flavor is where the beer shines as it zeroes in on the bitter tastebuds with a hop-forward hop blast. It's almost like some kind of hop extract, the flavor reminds me a little of sipping something what hop juice might taste like if steeped in vodka. Tons of piney, sappyness, catty hops without a trace of malts anywhere around (love it). The alcohol is a bit distracting though, but not too much. Really nice beer and nice on the wallet. Dig it.

Shared bottle at local tasting. Golden colour, large white head. Strong aroma of resinous American hops, also hints of orange marmalade. The flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout, with a piney and grapefruity bitterness, but is still not too extreme.

22oz bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange with a huge creamy rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is meloney citrus and piney, resiny, stinky hops.

The flavor is some sweet melon with a big resiny tarry, slightly charred hop finish with bitterness that dominates the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, a good DIPA. It's definitely big in the hops - a bit to tarry / charred for me with a huge bitter aftertaste. The sweet fruits help to balance it a little, but not much.

It pours a slightly hazy burnt-orange/amber with a thick off-white head and copious lacing. An aroma of caramel malts, pineapple juice, hops, light pine, bread and yeast, and spices. The mouthfeel is sort of thin and watery. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, pineapple and orange, and spices. The taste is ok, but the mouthfeel is horribly thin.

Served (@TJ's) in a snifter. Pour revealed a orange/lemon color with a smallish white head. There was a sticky lacing all the way through. While there was some pine, the nose is a VERY strong punch of piney hops and citrus - oranges, lemons, mango, apricot and grapefruit. As is often the case, this was served too cold and I had to let it sit. The taste is a hop explosion with the citrus that was so strong in the nose taking a backseat. There is some honey/mango/malt sweetness but, even as it warmed, it wasn't quite able to overcome the dry, hops. Mouthfeel is light to medium and sticky. Carbonation is good. I didn't notice any warming - no hints of the 8.5%. This is quite refreshing, although I wouldn't call it balanced. Doubt I could drink a lot of this a one sitting but, all-in-all, it's a very good West Coast style IPA.

being from one of my favorite breweries, THE biggest letdown of the DIPA fest. didn't want to finish. not really a drain pour per se, but left an ounce or two to save my liver and palate for bigger and better things. Just...average. At best. I'm not getting the fuss (scores a 99 on RB) and I've loved just about every Port IPA and IIPA thus far. i'll give it another shot in the bottle if i see a fresh one...with lowered expectations. 4/11 - well, i don't know what the deal was at SFBW DBL IPA fest, but that keg kinda sucked, and an obviously fresh bottle was much much better! big flaoral and citrus hops. not too balanced, but a little sweet too. very nice - i'll buy again.
