For our sixth stop on our journey to celebrate New Jersey, we travel to Exit 13. This exit is probably best known for it’s view of the Newark airport, but it is also home to the Port of Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest in the world. Elizabeth was also New Jersey’s original capitol. Many food products come through the port, including the Belgian chocolate we’re using for what we’re calling an import/ export stout. This fuller “export style” stout gives a sturdy base for the rich chocolate flavor. More than 600 pounds of Belcolade chocolate went into this brew. A mix of imported and domestic malts are highlighted by roastiness from dark wheat. An Irish ale yeast and Pacific Northwest hops combine to create an excellent dessert beer as well as one to share in the cool weather with friends.

I was expecting a bit more from this for the price, but nonetheless a solid extra stout. Chocolate stands out nice and great balance with hop finish. Could us maybe a bit more thickness, flavor, and hop...but that would make it almost like an IPS. Not much different than the new Guiness Foreign Extra where you can get an entire 4-pack for slightly less price, or some other foreign extras out there. Good representation for this style...appearance and flavor is what makes it here. Maybe not quite a 9 overall, but an 8 would be a bit too low. Probably won't get again, but worth the sample.

Aroma is rich with an overtone of semi-sweet chocolate and tones of quality roast coffee and malt. It pours a beautiful black-brown with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled chocolaty-tan head. Flavor gives the impression of a fine mocha - semi-sweet chocolate and high-quality roast coffee, with a hint of caramel and whispers of wood and apple brandy. Smooth texture leaves a subtle but persistent tingle and a surprisingly hoppy finish, as well as tones of chocolate and coffee. A must for stout nuts!

I paired this with an onion-bean soup. The pour was a 10. A WOW. A deep black colored beer with a big creamy textured, brown head rising above. Decent hang time, settling eventually into a thin ringlet and light cap. Sweet cocoa and roasty malt in the nose and in the tasting. A medium bodied, creamy (think chocolate milk) beer. I totally enjoyed, sorry I only picked up one of this limited edition, hard to find treasure.
