"Hen's Tooth is a bottle-conditioned ale, the nearest thing to 'real ale' in a bottle. Whereas the taste of ordinary bottled ales passes its prime within a relatively short time, bottle-conditioned beer just gets better and better, reaching its finest, fullest flavour after as many as 12 months. You can identify this special kind of ale by the sediment you'll find in the base of the bottle. This is a measured amount of active yeast that reacts with sugars in the beer and carries on fermenting throughout the beer's life. It's the same maturing process that occurs in a sealed barrel of real ale. It also gives the ale its characteristically smooth, foamy head. The presence of Morland's unique 100-year old yeast gives Hen's Tooth its initial flavour and character, then helps make that flavour even richer and more distinctive as it develops in the bottle. (If you wish to prevent the yeast sediment from tipping into your glass, pour the ale carefully and steadily - a well-rewarded moment of care!). Pours an average amount of foamy head and has a clean, amber/copper appearance. Weak lacing. Has aromas of barley malts, mild caramel malts and some herbal hops. Flavours are equally malty with toffee, caramel and brown sugary notes. Hops are mainly herbal and earthy types. Also some toasted malts and berries in the finish. Much more sweetness than bitterness. A good balance nonetheless. Fairly creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Pretty good stuff.

Part of a Morland Christmas 4-pack at the LCBO. The beer pours a slightly hazed caramel colour with a quarter inch tan coloured cap cap that slowly disappears into a thin film. The aroma is grainy, sweet malt, and toffee. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly creamy and with average carbonation. Flavour is on the sweet side with notes of toffee and bread. THis could be quite sessionable for a 6.5% beer. -

poured a redish amber color, with a really nice slightly off white head that has some real staying power. It had a slightly sour skunky aroma, but taste of caramel but had a slightly bitter aftertaste but overall a decent ale.

a nice fruity smooth sessionable ale. big fluffy white head, easy drinkin at that abv. already said well...perfumey aroma, apple-like sweetness, just enough hops to balance.

I picked this beer up from Honeygo Wine & Spirits in White Marsh, MD on Thanksgiving (2011). I had this beer with some raw oysters waiting for the turkey. It was phenomenal - a classic British ale - creamy, big head, full bodied, smooth. I would totally have this again.

I enjoy a bottle of Old Speckled Hen every now and then so why wouldn't I enjoy a bottle of the Hen's Tooth....and I do. A nice copper coloured pour with a thin ring for a head. Aroma is caramel, fruit, and perfumey hops. Flavour starts of sweet with caramel, goes through a spicy transition before a bitter finish.

500 ml capped and translucent bottle. Poured a clear red copper or ruby-brown coloured ale with a generous two fingers beige creamy foamy head that had a very long retention and tons of bubbles. Active carbonation. Good lacing. The aroma is toasted malts, brown sugar, fruity, raisin and spicy, licorice. The flavour is toasted malts, caramel, toffees, fruity, cherries, berries, faint herbal hops. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. This medium bodied ale has a dry caramel malty finish. A pleasant ale, may be a touch to sweet.

Sampled on 6/2/2010. This English strong ale pours a dark copper color from a 50cl clear bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with decent retention and nice lacing. Aroma is iced tea, some orange, caramel and sweet. A medium bodied English Strong Ale. The malts are caramel and sweet with a bunch of ice tea flavors. The hops are herbal. Decent but mild carbonation. A little harsh tasting, way to much iced tea, not enough caramel malt. This beer is fairly typical of the bottled English beers that get imported to the US. I am beginning to think that the British are trying to get back at us for the Revolutionary War, maybe the War of 1812 I don’t know. There are a few good ones out there, but this one isn’t even close. Definitely in the session style, but its kind of boring and bland. There is the ice tea thing going on and it’s a touch vegetative at the finish. MEH! Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and vegetative.

Pours an interesting orange color, huge head, in fact head will fill up over 80% of the mug when doing the initial pour. flavor is ok, nothing to get excited about, just a good average ale.

The beer pours out a really beautiful cherrywood brown/red that’s quite pretty to stare at. Creamy off-white head with nice staying power. Aroma was skunky (thank you clear bottle), buttery and a touch of iced tea. Flavor was remarkably better, albeit sweet. Seemed like some sugar had been added as it reminded me of a sweetened tea they serve in the South. Light toffee notes tasted too.
