LONG time wish lister: Definitely more barleywine than IPA after time in the barrels, but DAMN do the Redemption Rye barrels compliment this beer well! Luscious feel, full aroma and flavor, bitterweet, heavy on the rye, very very smooth. Opened up and just kept getting better.

I only had the R.I.P.A once, and have been meaning to sample again. This is an entire different twist with the aging on rye whiskey barrels. The DIPA traits are masked somewhat by the sweet bourbon flavors, but they work well together and balanced quite well. I have found some whiskey aging brews to be overly sweet. This one is close....not quite though. A great beer, just may prefer the regular standard R.I.P.A. since you can taste more of the malty flavors in that one.

Time has done this bottle well, the spicy rye and whiskey have mellowed along with the cereal malt body to create a smoothed out treat. Copper brown, hazy body with a foamy khaki colored head and thick lacing. Some floral hops remain, but the caramel and bran malt characteristics are in full force coupled with the subdued spicy rye. Big time vanilla and wood along with a faint hint of whiskey. Incredible mouthfeel, very soft and rich.

Bottling date of 8/3/2010. Also has a Batch/Cases listing on the bottle of 002/304. Beautiful deep amber coloring with a tawny head - nice thick foam. Heavy malt aroma died out quickly. Flavor is all about the hops - bitter from the start through the finish. There is definitely some chewy malt beneath, but you have to try to focus on it. Mouthfeel is syrupy and a bit sticky/sweet. I love Rye beers and was disappointed that the rye flavors were muted at best in this one. A nice hoppy IPA, just wish it'd been better.

May 2010 - Dark chestnut pour with ruby highlights, absolutely beautiful color. The frothy head quickly dissipates to nothing. Funky sweet aroma with skunk notes. The flavor was predominantly sweet due to the whisky barrel. Bordering on too much from the barrel aging, not as badly as many of these things, but still. Caramel malts add somewhat to the sweetness, witrh very little hop sweetness. I could taste the hops, simcoe mostly, but other herbal, resinous hops, too. All in all, I still enjoyed it, for some reason.
