Our first release of the embodiment of good versus evil in a barrel-aged blend. Part bourbon barreled The Serpent’s Stout, and part brandy barreled The Angel’s Share, this is our most anticipated release of the summer.

Pours a deep sable a scratch above black with a thick, if not persistent, tan head. Malty aroma has a strong overtone of bourbon-soaked wood and hints of toffee and chocolate. Distinctive flavor has malty, bourbon, woody, molasses, coffee, fruity - how many notes are there? I seem to get different ones with each sip! And whoa, what an alcohol bite, like a liquid pit bull that has decided your tongue is a juicy steak! Texture has firm body and plenty of fizz and sass, and the tingle it leaves behind decided to sit for a spell. This beer is worth going through hell, high water, airport security and over-affectionate great aunts to get.

Cork and caged bottle poured at cellar temp into a snifter. Thin black liquid with loads of carbonation and a brown head materialize in the glass. Aromas of apple brandy, wood and bourbon dominate but meld well together, inviting a small sip. Very sweet tastes up front as the brandy dominates but are fought valiantly by oak, vanilla, and bourbon and finish with a sharp alcohol bite. I REALLY like the beer, but I must say those that don't like barrel aged brew will struggle with this. It is difficult to differentiate the base brews here, but not the barrel aging.

No no no. Don't do that. It's going to know it's a trap, Dee. That's going to irritate the cat, and then it's going to dig itself down further and we may never get to it. Lets start thinking like a cat here, alright? You know - we need another cat. That's what we need. Here's what we're going to do. I'm going to crack a little hole in your wall - a tiny one, it'll be cool - and then I'm going to slip a second cat in with a string tied around it. Those two will become codependent, then I'll rip the second cat out and the first one hopefully, hopefully will follow.

Another generous sample from #KnoxBeerCrew tasting. Thanks to ModerHead for this beauty. Almost black pour, deep and dark, slight head and little lacing. Nice welcoming Bourbon and Brandy aromas, soft and subtle, oak, vanilla, ripe fruits, roasted malts. Flavor is boozy, Bourbon and port, some of the brandy imparts, but more Bourbon, ripe fruits offset a deep roasted malt quality. Damn tasty. Another one I thought I'd never try...

My 301st review! YAY! Good one to do it with, it was intended to be 300, but like an idiot it was instead bridgeport stumptown tart strawberry ale. Not a bad beer, just that my life is much more depressing as a result.... I hope the sarcasm come through.... but enough about me.... Wow smell the brandy a mile away as soon as this lovely black elixir is allowed to drain from the bottle to the glass. Little head is created despite a rather agressive tilt to the bottle and a rather violent descent from the bottle into a affligem goblet. Second go at it is vanilla of the extremely alcoholic bourbon variety-- it is worth noting that this aroma is bold and straightforward-- of a very simple structure. First sip brings coffee, tar, fossil fuel extraction, brandy, grappa, really sour cabsav, and really old dried prunes. I know what old dired prunes taste like cause I have a box that often is forgotten. Raisins too while we are on the dried fruit end of things, and maybe some dried apricot. As I continue the consumption of this beverage, I remark that this review is rather strange, but then I think--- this beer gets more and more complex the more I allow my palate to register it. Way up there on the not for the timid scale. And thanks to myro for bringing this to Canada from Bottleworks in Seattle. 12.5% alcohol does not register in a hot way, just more of a strong suggestion to sip nicely. That said it drops down easily, exhibiting a very full bodied hot oatmeal meets milk meets maple syrup way. Some birch bark shows up, and vanilla and brandy make strong reconnection's. Finally some marijuana smoke and wet cigars show up fashionably late, but the party is all the better for them. I swear I am not a schizophrenic.

dark brown near black. smell amazingly complex vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, a touch of brandy and ripe fruit. super duper smooth. head to head with a 6 month old Angels Share grand cru, and this one is not as hot, although it’s definitely a sipper. one of the best sippers actually. best of both brews. gotta do a head to head with a regular old serpent stout to determine my favorite lost abbey beer. wish they were reasonably priced, though.

Sampled on 9/25/2010. This American Strong Ale pours a eclipse black color from a 375ml bottle. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is bourbon, chocolate, coffee, fruity and sweet. Medium to full bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity, chocolate, and sweet. The hops are herbal. Little to no carbonation, but not really sure the beer needs much. A touch of alcohol but it works with the bourbon, oak, brandy and chocolate. Some sweeter chocolate flavors come out as it warms. Good sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly biter.
