A perennial favorite at our brewery Halloween party, Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale is brewed with over 11 pounds of real pumpkin per barrel, adding a full body and sweetness to this dark reddish amber brew. Deep roasted malts, including a smoked malt, lend a distinct roasted character while traditional pumpkin pie spices give the beer a subtle spice note. Pumpkin Ale is one of the oldest beer styles that originated in America. Early colonists lacked some of the classic beer ingredients, so in place of malt other fermentable sugars such as molasses or pumpkin were used. Pumpkin beers were not as popular at first since the pumpkin was used for its sugar alone rather than its flavor. More recently, pumpkins have been used in addition to malt and other spices to create flavorful pumpkin ales. For our take on the style we've used a large portion of real pumpkin to give it a natural richness of flavor. To brew our version of this fall favorite, we used a significant portion of real pumpkin. The pumpkin is added to the mash to meld with the malt flavors, bringing out its true flavor in the final brew. In addition to our classic two-row pale malt and Caramel 60, we've added Special B and Smoked Malt for a deep roasted and nutty character that perfectly complements the pumpkin. Once in the kettle we also add clove and the classic pumpkin pie spices of cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and nutmeg. The spices subtly enhance the character of the pumpkin and malt without overpowering it. Flavor: Smooth and roasty, real pumpkin adds to a full body and sweetness while deep roasted malts lend a toasty finish to this subtly spiced brew. Not a terrible beer, but then again, not great. That being said, pumpkin beers that taste like spice bombs aren't for me. This was sugary sweet and high on spice. A tad much for me.

Pours out brown in color whit a tan quickly vanishing head. The aroma smells like cold dirt in the early winter. The mouthfeel is good and solid. The taste is as pumpkin, clove, spice and malt. A really good pumpkin beer.

Part of the holiday 12-pack. I really like pumpkin beers that taste more like pumpkin pulp than pumpkin pie. This is one of those ales. Dark reddish brown, little-to-no foam, and the rich earthy aroma of pulp. Lots of puklpy goodness with just enough spices to help it go down. The spices are really in the background, lingering in the peripheral taste of the beer. Finishes clean. A nice beer to have with my dinners that are starting to bear a strong resemblance to thanksgiving-type fare.

Part of their 12-pack Harvest Collection for 2012 (brought back from the States by Lilihel). Pours a deep amber colour with a big beige creamy head, better than average retention and thick patchy lace that does not stick well to the glass. The pumpkin is what is mostly present in the smell. At the last pour, cinnamon is felt, but the rest of the spices are hard to find. Oily mouthfeel and pretty long in the mouth. Pumpkin again in the taste, with the spices coming through after breathing a bit. Nice grainy malt finish with some caramel notes. A nicely brewed pumpkin ale for those who prefer the vegetable to the spicy ones.

Rich, malty aroma has a strong overtone of cinnamon and a firm pumpkin hint. Pours a clear, dark copper with a thick, fine-bubbled, persistent light tan head. Flavor has a core of malt and pumpkin with strong cinnamon and clove notes and just a hint of caramel. Quite satisfying and tasty, almost like a liquid pumpkin pie. Smooth texture has good body and fizz. A darned good beer for saying farewell to Summer and hello to Autumn.

Pours amber to nutmeg. Tight foam cap that almost disappears. Smell is of fresh pumpkin pie. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. The nutmeg and allspice tastes are a bit overwhelming. Too many spices. Would have been great with 1/2 as much spice. Finish is dry.

A rich ruby amber colored beer with a large frothy textured off white head rising above. There's some good hang time. Settles into a thin ringlet. Light cinnamon and pumpkin aroma. Stronger of the same in the tasting. But milder than other pumpkin spiced ales. Medium bodied.

Really nice pumpkin ale. Pours a deep amber color with a medium sized off white head. I enjoyed the mild clove and spice taste along with slightly sweet finish. I think it gives Southern Tier's Pumpking a run for its money.

    12oz bottle -

Picked up in the Fall Seasonal 12-pack box. I've been looking forward to sample and rate this beer, because there's nothing I look forward to reviewing than a pumpkin beer (other than a stout of course).

The aroma has some nice pumpkin spice character to it, but it's really restrained. Kept under lock and key if you will. Perhaps it's not to startle the newbie trying a pumpkin beer for the first time? But the aroma was just a notch better than Michelob's Pumpkin Spice beer. Flavor has some light sweetness to it, and the pumpkin character seems watered down. Almost like the idea was to keep this quaffable, which to me...pumpkin beers should be decadent like a great dessert. And they did succeed in making this quite quaffable, but if you are gonna include only 2 beers into this pack, I guess to make money on it they couldn't dump all kinds of malt and alcohol into it. Is it on a level of Pumking? No way...not even close. But it's not bad.

Pours a very dark brown with a moderate dead. Aroma is pumpkin heavy. Taste is somewhat bland with little spice or pumpkin taste. Moouth feel is more like a cola than a beer. Overall its drinkable but not on my favorite list. May have again.
