Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip. The Half-light was born in our Montreal brewpub in April 2008.

Nice aroma of chocolate and pine. Dark brown murky pour with a head for 30 seconds. No lacing. Burnt malt flavour with chocolate, black coffee, spice and a medium pine bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation.

Bottle - decants a dark brown hazed ale with ruby highlight. 2 finger frothy tan cap laces well - a beautiful looking brew in a glass. Aroma has elements of floral, pine roastiness and light malt sweetness. Very nice balance between west coast hopping and the roasty sweetness of the malts - a nice flush of thick roasty malts hit the palate first then the hops one in to perfectly balance this with piney-citrus peel bittering - goes to a long silken finish where increasing hop bittering compliments roasty astringence with malt notes riding just below this. A great Cascadian,

The beer pours a coca-cola brownish0black with a very thin tan head. Aroma is citrusy hops, roasted malt, and 'funk'. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, hops, and molasses with a very bitter finish. Tasty.

6.5% ABV. from the bottle. The coffee notes and roasted malt take over the hop smell in this one. Pours a dark brown colour with a big, creamy-foam head that is beige, long lasting and gives out loads of sticky lacing. The roasted malt is helped out in the taste with some caramel malt to soften the burnt flavours. Sweet light butterscotch and fruity aromas eventually come out. Again, the hop is not as overpowering as I have tasted in other Black IPA. Beautiful mild warming and bitterness in the mouthfeel. Some burnt wood comes out in the finish to linger with the hop.

Pours a pretty good amount of brownish head and has a dark brown colour, fairly dull clarity. Aromas are sharp earthy hops balanced with roasted and toasty malts. Has spicy hop flavours with sweet toffee and chocolate maltiness. Some dry fruits (raisins), nuts and hints of caramel. Medium bodied mouthfeel, average carbonation and has a slight warming sensation. Slight bitterness in the finish, which is actually pretty nice. A well balanced black IPA, between hops and malts, and didn't find one overpowering the other. Dieu du Ciel seems to never disappoint. Well, rarely.
