Ideal for the Lager drinker who prefers amber beers, the "Scratch" is a smooth, malt-accentuated lager. Brewed in the "Steam-Style" tradition, scratch is a so-called hybrid beer that is fermented at medium temperatures to develop some ale and lager characteristics.

Pours out in a clear amber color with a small head of off-white foam. Aroma of caramel, mild fudge, brown sugar and citrus hops. Medium-bodied. Low on hops. Clean and malty sweet finish of caramel.

Light brown, ruby color with off white bubbly foam head. Sweet aroma and evenso sweet taste, although some bitter tones are clearly present. Nice long lasting bittersweet aftertaste. (Velp 201208)

Um, I sort of liked this. Caramel brown pour with ok head. Caramel lagery like aroma. Taste was sweet caramel base, some teabag and a bit of funky lager flavor. Some more bitterness on the back end would have made it better, but still pretty good.

Pours a dark amber color with a nice head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is a little on the bland side. Taste is slightly watered down but finishes good. Above average, will have again.

Very nice amber. Copper/Red with a very nice off white, pillowy head. Clear body. Head sticking around for a few minutes and leaving a nice bit of lacing. Looks pretty darn good in the glass!!! Nice bit of malt in the nose. Not overdone and not underdone. Middle of the road. Fair amount of the bready/biscuit goodness working its way through as the beer warms. Some caramel and sour dough hide just underneath the other aromas. Malt in the taste with a small hop bite in the finish. Getting hints of a smokey flavor I thought. Nice warming feel as it glides across the tongue to the back of the throat. Medium mouthfeel. Rather dry and crisp and smooth. Aftertaste hangs around for a while on the roof of the mouth and tongue. Not as long as some others, but long enough to satisfy me. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I like it. Easy drinking. Looks great in the glass and had an above average smell, taste and mouthfeel. Great Fall session brew. I hope I can pick this up again sometime. I was expecting an average brew, but ot me, this is a few steps above average.

Purchased on my trip to Nashville. Pours an amber clean colour with a big off-white cap that stays a long time, and lacing is spotted all over. Aromas are very light in this one: mild hop, caramel and well, I cannot find much else. The caramel is a bit more apparent in the taste. Malty, medium-bodied, with little notes of nuts and hop in the aftertaste. Not totally impressed by this one (not saying it is not good, but kind of boring).

Pours an amber bronze with a white head that dissipated fairly quickly with some lacing throughout. Malty aroma with a hint of sweetness as well as the taste. Noticable caramel as well. Not typically a fan of this style but I was pleasantly surprised.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear light amber with a medium white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet bready (slightly vegetal) malts.

The flavor is sweet vegetal caramel malts with a bit of a metallic twang at the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some prickly carbonation.

Overall, this is barely one step above a macro. I didn’t care for this at all.

Pours a pretty copper-amber color with a modest head that disappeared rapidly, with more lacing than the head would suggest. Aroma is lightly malty-sweet. Flavor echoes the nose; hops are more feel than flavor. Mouthfeel has a little more body than a typical lager. Finishes with a mild, sweet aftertaste with an unanticipated, very slight peppery note. Overall, a nice example of the "california common" hybrid style, too big for a pale lager, but not quite an ale, either.
