Named for John Brown, the fiery abolitionist from the U.S. Civil War era. Brown is a well known (though often overly romanticized) figure in Kansas history. His actions in support of the free-staters in the 1850s was quite notable but also quite violent and vengeful. A religious zealot with a long family history of insanity, one of Brown's favorite maxims was "Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins". During his colorful career with the free state militia, Brown made sure that there was no shortage of the remissions of sins. But on a lighter note, his namesake ale is actually a very mild, pleasant brown ale with a definite emphasis on the malt rather than the hops. Made from a choice selection of malts, this is a bit sweeter than the Ad Astra, but not quite so sweet as a bock beer.

A very good session brown ale from Lawrence, KS. Not nearly as vibrant as Schlafly's American Brown, but this is still one solid, solid ale to be sure. Soft and carbonated mouthfeel. Suggestions of roast and a very pleasant maltiness back up a subdued and earthy hop presence. Good offering, guys. I really want this on cask, pronto. BTW This is review #500

Served up good with abour half an inch of head. Very non-offending. Not much hop character to talk about. Pretty underwhelming malt character. Session beer.

I've heard raves about this beer for quite a while, and I have to say it lives up to the hype. It has a nice dark color with a small off white head. Flavor is wonderful, sweet and malty, but not overpowering. Slight pleasant aftertaste. Definitely my favorite brown ale, and is one of my top five overall beers.

Fairly dark body with a thin head. Aroma of grass and dirt. The taste is nice and smooth. Lots of malt with some corn flakes. Better than the average brown.

One of the best, most flavorful ales, IMO. It starts with its rich, caramel color, and then its sweet aroma. Finish it off with a nice flavor and pleasant aftertaste. Quite possibly my favorite beer.
