Review from a 750ml cork and caged bottle - deep brown/black with a walnut colored head. Strong forward aromas of whiskey - oak and alcohol phenols. Whiskey dominates the taste, the aforementioned oak and alcohol take center stage. The base beer contributes a malty sweetness and notes of chocolate, roasted barley, and licorice. This is a tad hot and age should help integrate the flavors, but that's not to say this isn't tasty fresh.

Ordered this as a special treat the other night (thanks to a gift card) and was very happy with it. I've tried the regular Gonzo before and wasn't terribly impresses. However, I am loving the very assertive whiskey notes in both aroma and flavor in this version with chocolate and roasted malt notes firmly left in the background. Would probably be even better a year or 2 from now.

750 - nice presentation. Generous head, especially for a barreled beer. Like the classic Gonzo, a little rough around the edges with the fizziness and aggressiveness of the flavors (not to mention whiskey instead of, say, a smoother bourbon) but therein lies the charm. It's what I expected and hoped for. Pretty sweet, but a good balance of booze, roast, chocolate, a hint of tartness and hops.

Aromas of buttery oak, molasses, chocolate, etc. Pours very thick, rich, almost black, deep brown. Almost no head and what there is goes away quickly. Mouthfeel is thick and buttery. The porter flavor is extremely mild, the oak notes dominate. Alcohol presence is noticeable but not overwhelming. Aging has given this beer a nice balance. I have to think the negative reviews were based on spoiled bottles because this one didn't display any of those characteristics.

Sampled on 9/10/2011 at Beer Revolution. This Imperial Porter pours a deep black color from the tap. Small to medium sized white/tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, wood and whisky. A medium to full bodied Imperial Porter. The malts are roasty, chocolate, coffee, whisky and wood. The hops are earthy. Mild carbonation. Touch of smokiness. Some sweetness and wood throughout. Nice balance. This beer kind of grows on you. I didn’t really like it at first sip, but it get much better as it warms. Touch of alcohol as well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with some alcohol.

Recently enjoyed on tap, one of the leftovers from The Brew Kettle's Ogre Fest. Good addition to the original Gonzo, the barrel aging adds an enjoyable depth. I've had this a while back from the bottle, but the draft version is much better.

I've tried Flying Dog a few times before this, and never really cared too much for them. Mainly tried their variety pack, IPA, and a brown ale I think. This was a little better than I expected....especially after paying the price. I didn't think anything too special after I drank the first one, but the 2nd beer (another day of course) seemed a little smoother to me. A very dark brown, coffee black appearance with a mocha head. A pretty thick, heavy porter........strong too. This may have me curious to try some of their other beers again.

Pours out in an opaque black colour with a rich lasting pale brown foam. Rich aroma of wood, licorice, black chocolate, coconut, ink, brown sugar and ash. Full-bodied with notes of oak, salty licorice, ash, black chocolate, brown sugar and black coffee. Long bitter finish of black coffee and chocolate and sweetish undertones of bourbon and caramelized sugar.

only 2 made it to downtown Houston, my boy Stumac grabbed one of them for the 2nd Stumelagram tasting ... oak, smoke, sour cherry skins, and alcohol in the nose ... very light in the mouth .. powerful yet subtle-- like being beaten into a coma with a whiffel bat .. "what seems to be the offficer, problem?"
