Way down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers age their whiskeys for many years in oak barrels. Over time, some whiskey is lost to evaporation. They refer to this loss of spirits as "The Angel's Share." Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of this liquid seeps into the oak and is lost forever. Our Angel's Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. As with all of our beers, this beer is brewed for sinners and saints alike. So be an angel and share it with a friend or two.

Thanks, Kaare my giant neibour. 2008 drank in 2013.... Deep brown body with zero cap not one single bubble was produced at pour. Why aroma i want to drink. Aroma burnt sugar, red wine, wallnuts, spice, vannilla. Fuck this is good. Thick feel but way to flat. Taste is the same. Creamy smooth...... wine, spice, fuck zero trace of 12% i like this beer so very much. I love this beer..... not quit the legend but so dam fine.

Brandy Barrel Angels Share: This beer was all over the place for my tastes. The components of greatness are in there, but it never felt as if it properly came together. Big and syrupy with an alcoholic sweetness. Lots of deep raisin, tobacco, mixed berries, wood and toffee were present. Lifeless pour and a very hearty scent. Mixed bag for sure.

12.7oz bottle, 2009 version. Pours a dark brown black with a little fizz for a head that quickly disappears completely.

The aroma is dark fruits, bready chocolate and molasses, some vanilla and a harsh medicinal alcohol.

The flavor is sweet sugary plums and figs and vanilla with some bready malts and a harsh alcoholic bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with no carbonation.

Overall, it's interesting with a lot of complex flavors, but it's way too over the top for me, esp in alcohol and sweetness - more like a liquor than a beer. Tastes a bit like plum or fig cough medicine.

12.7 Oz. corked and wired bottle, as The Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, 2009 vintage, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.5%. Nearly black colour, low tan head. Strong sweetish fusel aroma bordering on "sickly", strong oaky notes. Moderate carbonation in the glass. Intense sweet and malty flavour with strong notes of oak, dark dried fruits and old sherry, partly balanced by noticeable hops in the finish. Oaky aftertaste.

2008. 375 ml. Courtesy of Jake65. Ok, I’m well aware of the carbonation issues with this beer but it’s one I’ve wanted to try for a while now so I was still looking forward to it. First of all, the aroma is amazing. Brandy, toffee, molasses, plums, red licorice, oak, blend to make a wonderful scent. Deep brown color with some red tint and no surprise pours out with no head at all, even with a vigorous pour (hey, I can try!). A few lonely bubbles float around the edges. The lack of carbonation doesn’t at all kill this beer, it’s very tasty, but man with just a little it really would be world class (and perhaps almost worth the price). Warming, soothing, with some alcohol burn to let you know it’s there but otherwise gentle. After all the negative stuff on this beer I really thought I was going to bash it but not the case. No carbonation it’s still very good. Properly carbonated, I’d like to find out!

An overpriced beer in the city of Toronto, but I had heard some good things from friends in California. This bottle was dated 2007 and is 11.5%. It poured a dark brown with black hints, and a thin tan head. The aroma was dark fruit, alcohol, and dark malts. The flavour was very flat as only the malt and alcohol came through, resulting in a sweet malty beer that warmed on the way down, but had little else going for it.

Sampled from bottle, big thanks to Chris M. Pours murky reddish-brown with no head or lacing. Not pretty, but that's intentional. Incredibly complex aroma with over-ripe dark fruit, leather, vanilla, burnt sugar. Caramel, vanilla, oak, prune, chocolate and toast. Full-bodied, not carbonated and warming. A unique beer and worth trying.

Pours a thick-looking blackish red color with almost no visible carbonation. Aroma is overwhelming with notes of sweet malt and intense alcohol. The flavor has a whiskey quality with a lot of vanilla and woodiness even though my sampler was not the bourbon barrel. There is a subtle sourness to balance all the sweet malt. Alcohol plays a flavor role, but a very small one compared to the role it plays in mouthfeel. Full bodied and viscous with serious warming affect. A wonderful sampler.

i'm grading the Brandy Barrel (standard) Angel's Share, but it hasn't been 10.5% since 2006. 11.5 in '07, and mine ('08) came in at 12.5, same as the bourbon barrel. the funny thing is, the massive amounts of malt used still brought out vanilla/oak characteristics of bourbon aging, but sans the pepper. In addition to that, this was easily the darkest barleywine i've ever seen, althought the 12 months (not 6) it spent in barrels renders the beer style nearly obselete. beyond the obvious, the warming effect of the alcohol was very pleasant, although at first i though it was going to be a little hot. the tobacco/cigar flavor added an unexpected level of complexity to the malt, vanilla, and sweet raisin flavors. This is a great sipper, surprisingly not cloyingly sweet, given the aroma and lack of hops in the flavor. no issues here. best...cigar...beer...ever? different bottle 12/09-the tobacco still there a little in the aroma but not so much in the flavor. more brandied fruitcake, and a touch hotter. still excellent, but slipped JUST enough to let the Bourbon Barrel surpass it.

2008 750ml bottle.. drank on july 10th 2009 @ 6:15pm::::: Very light tiny pop, pours a jet black with maybe 50 small brown bubbles on a vigorous pour, headring disappears after a minute or two .. . . smell is wonderful, from clean dark fruits, to candied brandy, and all the smells of your childhood (if your parents were lushes) ... . mouthfeel of water, no carbonation, like drinking a pussy version of SA Triple bock, but its actually very easy to drink, unlike the 3x bock .. .. quite a lot of heat comes through, but for 12% not that bad .. . . even a light touch of carbonation would have been nice .. . flavours of oak, smoke, tar, chocolate plums, cherry brandy ... . you're like a bone with a bone ... I can see why people got pissed about this brew, god! the potential this beer has to be great and the way Lost Abbey went about it is unexcuseable, money grubbers! but that being said, a nice brew but all and all: a disappointment ... . ya i said bump uglies, so what you wanna fight about it!?! .. . . It will take ALOT for me to buy Lost Abbey beer again, thanks Tomme, i hope you enjoy my $32 ... you're a fuckin crook ... honestly: i did kinda enjoy this beer in a weird way, but basically it is a mess....
