Our schwarzbier (black beer) is a traditional German style lager beer. The use of roasted chocolate malt gives this dark colored, medium bodied beer a wonderful sweet maltiness. This beer was brewed in Sierra Nevada's new 10 barrel pilot brewery.

Bottled@The 1st Vaasa CS/ES beer session (Thanks JS). Deep ambery brown colour, close to black, with mediumsized beige head. Aroma is roasted malts along with some slight toffee, caramel and mild grassy notes as well. Flavour is roasted malts, burnt wood, some toffee, caramel and mild dark dry fruity notes. Ends in a rather ashy way.

Pours out in a dark brown colour with a low tan head. Sweetish aroma of cocoa and caramel. Medium-bodied with clean notes of caramel, dark chocolate with notes of grass and resin. Medium-bitter finish of roasted malts, fudge, grass and caramel.

On tap at O’brien’s. Pours with a dark brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. IT’s slightly sweet and malty with a slight roastiness...not much else. Medium bodied and smooth.

I guess this is my first Sierra Nevada review. Hmmm. I'll have to work on that. Anyway, Schwartzbier had zero in terms of head, but the color was a deep rich thick molasses black. I could not detect any appreciable aromas. On the buds, this Schwartzy had a nice subtle burnt malt flavor that was nice and mild. Tastes of cocoa, and smokey notes, & even a slight detection of peanut butter, were all rolled into this one. Hoppage was low (which suits me just fine) and the finish was semi-watery. I was expecting something excruciatingly hoppy. Thank heavens it's not!
