With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Pours out a very dark cloudy brown with no head. The aroma is deep malt and fruity raisin and fig smell. The mouthfeel is smooth and thick. The taste is a heavy sweet malt, wheat and maple.

Pours a very cloudy copper color with a one finger off white head that lofts a bit. Carbonation out the ass in this one. Aroma is quite potent. Hints of oak, vanilla, and spices. Taste is very metallic with some sweet hints. Sorry to say that I could not drink it. Hopefully this was a bad bottle.

Seriously thought I'd reviewed this before. Guess not? My cellared bottle pours murky brown with practically no head. Sweet caramel and raisin aroma with mild lemon tang, maybe a bit of bread and vanilla. Flavor is classic Belgian goodness: rich dark fruits and bread, raisins, dates, cherries, caramel, molasses, a little coffee. Substantial, smooth, tingly, sticky. Reminds me why I love Belgians. A toast to my beloved Servais-Théodore Pinckaers! Blessed repose and memory eternal, brother!

Clear ruby red with small light brown foam head, lacing to glass, Aroma is nice caramel with some wood tones. Aroma is plesant mix of caramel, some coffee, some bitterness. Aftertast is nice rolling caramel on tongue. Surprising beer. (Salt Lake City 201308)

A nice belgian-style ale. Fast-disappearing head and no sediment in the bottle. Not complaints, just observations. It's a bit pricey, but a good brew and part of the profits go to music education. Thelonius Monk! I'm a fan of Eric Dolphy, I'd like to see a brew made in his honor someday :)

Been walking by this for too many years, today I finally plucked one into my flagship. Calm dark amber pour with a slow and steady light tan head with very little lacing. A pile of berries and other dark fruits come forward initially while a mildly spicy yeast layer slowly creeps into the mix. Faint hint of pumpkin and doughnut purges the nostrils. Cracker coating and floral after effect ties the knot into the bow. Wonderful brew and something I will grab from time to time.

Rich and robust indeed! From a couple feet away I smelled root beer. Probably that dark strong malt. The color is dark and gentle, there is a delicate lacing. Very strong dark malt. Mellow tang in the texture. It's one of my favorite "after-work-after-noon-relaxing-in-my-chair-and-contemplating-life-death-and-everything-between-while-listening-to-fantastic-music" beers. Cheers! ;)

One of the most delicious Belgian style strong ales I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. To me it fits nicely with the holidays, but that wouldn't make me wait 'til Christmas. I loved everything about this ale! The taste, the aroma, the color, the head, the body and the mouthfeel was just perfect. A wonderfully smooth fruity flavor that's not too sweet and not at all bitter. I detected no aftertaste. The alcohol AVB is not for beginners. At most a fat two pint night, spread out over 4 or 5 hours. Absolutely loved every minute of it. I highly recommend this Belgian style to any beer lover or BeerPal member! I was watching the fights and sipping on this little gem of an ale from 7p-1am last friday night. I'll be doing an encore around the holidays. :)

From Libations. Poured a dark body beneath a thin overy head. The nose detected a fair dollop of malt paired with dark fruit. Taste featured a pleasing combination of malt, spices, and the aforementioned dark fruit. Delightful, high quality beer.

pours with a good solid brown color. Tasty beery aroma, upon consumption I felt some rough edges that may diminish with time in a cool cellar. A prime example of what craft beer that is a little young to be consumed right off the market shelf.
