Jefferson Stout, Lazy Magnolia's original Sweet Potato Cream Stout, is Lazy Magnolia's version of the ideal Southern-Style Stout. Jefferson Stout is brewed with sweet potatoes and lactose (milk sugar). The sweet potatoes provide the background to an impressive taste with added notes of roasted chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors. Dark and hearty. An acquired taste for the traditional American beer drinker, it soon becomes a favorite of the adventuresome.

Thanks to my neighbor Joey for sharing - he picked up a growler of this at the local grocery store in Roanoke, VA. This was a thin stout, no head retention and smelled like roasted malts. The flavor was heavy of tobacco. Not the best, not the worst.

12-ounce bottle at World of Beer, Key West. Dark brown pour, tan head. Almost no aroma. Mouth trending to thin. Falvour not so bad, chocolate and coffee. Dry finish. Forgettable. But, my first Mississippi beer.

Kind of strange, where did the aroma go? This will do the beer rating no good. Some coffee notes. Likelwise not too strong taste, small coffee, some choclate, little bitter. (Austin 201505)

A dark brown to black colored beer with a small, one fingered sudsy textured tan head. Not much hang time on the head and no lacing. So disappointing. I get some chocolate, a little more coffee on the nose. Smoky, roastiness with cocoa in the tasting. This has potential but ut is a little too laid back. The body is thick, almost chewy. I'll finish it.

The beer has a black body with a very thin tan head. The aroma is mostly of roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is on the milder side of sweet with some nice malt backbone. I detected the chocolate notes. The mouthfeel is creamy for this medium bodied, moderately carbonated beer. This was easy to drink and it's a solid beer from the guys at Lazy Magnolia.

Maybe they improved on the appearance over the years, cause this one was dark dark brown/near black, with a nice mocha head that stuck around for a bit with some lacing. A little thicker and darker would be almost perfect. I'll admit, a little thin for a stout, but still had a semi-creamy texture. The blend of flavors worked well...and towards the end you can actually taste some yam/sweet potato/taro. Not sure if quite worth $2 a beer, or $11 a 6...but worth the try for sure. I liked this one.

Pours a beautiful sable with a fairly thick light tan head. Aroma has notes of roast coffee and molasses as well as burnt malt. Flavor has coffee, licorice and chocolate tones with a hint of smoky wood. Full-bodied texture has some good fizz. Didn’t get any sweet potato or milk notes, but it is still a tasty and enjoyable stout.

i’m sorry if i haven’t been smiling enough, mr. rumbold. but there must be a reason. are you– i don’t wish to pry– but are you– unhappy at home? ah– yes. that could very well be it, yes. now we’re getting somewhere. sit down and tell me about it. thank you. yes, sir. it’s my environment, you see, sir. i’ve only got this one shabby little room. - in highgate, isn’t it? - yes, very poor part of highgate, though. ever since we took in that asian to help make ends meet, well… the strain has been too much for my crippled mother, and… she’s had to give up her job at the skating rink. taking– taking the tickets. i had no idea. yes. well… what with that and the fact that the– the cat’s got asthma and has been coughing all night– what with all that and also the fact that i have to– we have to cook on a broken old gas ring… there are days when somehow life seems to have lost its magic.

Black appearance with tan head. Aroma contains some chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Flavor is bittersweet with chocolate, coffee, and some smokiness. Aftertaste shows some coffee bitterness. Overall pretty good beer.

On draft @ Broadway Brewhouse in downtown Nashville: Black pour with minimum head (due to bartender's pour), creamy tan color head that reduces to a ring and leaves some nice lacing throughout. Roasted malts, lightly burnt brown sugar and molasses, a bit of black coffee and bittersweet chocolate in the rich aromas. Same flavors as the aroma in the flavor with a hint of promised sweet potatoes to mellow it just a bit. Nice lightly burnt bitter in the end, dry finish. Had this after a couple of porters and it definitely was heavier bodied than those were - so - worthy, especially on tap.
