Black Rye We’ve reached into the vault and pulled out a cult classic from years ago. Before Black IPAs were all the rage, we made a dry-hopped dark ale with copious amounts of rye malt. Black Rye is a perfectly balanced blend of German- and American-grown hops, premium 2-row barley and heavily kilned rye and wheat malts. As with many of our offerings, there’s no style category that can contain this beer. It’s an original. ABV: 7.5% IBUs: 78

Pours warm sable with a thick and frothy light tan head; a peep of ruby-brown light comes through at the bottom of the glass. A strong rye tone dominates the aroma while allowing roast malt, chocolate, and nutty coffee notes to share the stage. Dusty flavor pleases with rye, toasty malt, chocolate, nutty, and subtle coffee notes. Texture is firm and fizzy, while finish has strong rye and smoky notes. Rye don’t you try one?

Very nice dark color, bursting with flavors and body. I liked the bitterness/ and how it seemed to balance nicely with the malts. The flavors seemed to melt together nicely.

A deep dark brown in color with a big frothy textured beige-tan head rising above. There's some hang time on the head. A thin ringlet is left. Nice roasty-spicy nose. That spiciness of rye dominates the tasting but allows for the roastiness of the malt to dance with it. Moderate-ull bodied. Well done.

12 oz bottle. Pours brown with a huge rocky light brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is rye, chocolate and some tart fruits with a little roasted coffee.

The flavor is sweet lactic chocolate, nuts, coffee and roasted malts with a little vinous fruitiness that blossoms as it warms. There is enough bitterness at the end for a dry crisp finish. The mouthfeel is is pretty full and creamy with some slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, an interesting and enjoyable beer.

Pours a very dark with just sme hints of ruby highlights around the edged. There's a two finger head that settles slowly to a thick cap, leaving behind thick clumps of foam on my glass. Smell; spicy rye up front, that I find very inviting. Chocolate and coffee notes are present, as well as some hints of hops. Taste; the rye really stands, and brings a nice spiciness to this. The chocolate is a little stronger than I expected, and is joined by a little coffee and a nice roasted, nutty maltiness. There's also a bit of a floral hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is nice and full, and almost dangerously drinkable. I've had this on tap before, and the bottled version is just about as good as I remember it being on tap. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up another sixer of this next year.

Bottle courtesy of Tpaliga: Poured a medium black color ale with a medium foamy head with average retention. Aroma of hops is dominant with some traces of malt being noticeable. Taste consists of predominantly citrus hops with a bitter finish and some light roasted malt. Body is a bit thin IMO and rye is very hard to detect. I would have appreciated a bit more complexity and less reliance on hops personally.

The Founders Black Rye is a very interesting beer that I feel is deffinetly worth seeking out. This beer poured a black body (dark burgandy when held to light) and topped off by a creamy khaki colored head that left great lace down the sides of the glass. The mouthfeel was creamy and rich, smooth and full bodied. The flavor was an excelent blend of rye, chocolate, roasted malts, and some light bitter hops in the finish.

Great brew here, poured much darker than I expected. Enormous medium tan head with lots of good lacing. Mild aroma slightly sharp and bitter, scents of chocolate malt and sweet caramel. Creamy and thick to the mouth good feel to this. Flavor resembles a light porter or sweet stout. Nice bitter hop flavor with a sharp graininess, which could be the rye. This is my first rye brew, and what a great one indeed.

A layer of foam sitting over a nutty, earth brown colour - great looking. Aroma is filled with substance - peet malt, rye malt, a fair bit of booze and plenty of hops! A good warming sensation is instilled with this one, but no booze is present in the taste. Very 'earthy' in character. Hops play a large (but understated) role in the profile. I can best describe the flavour as grainy, malty, 'oat-y' perhaps? Lots of dry character, exceptionally grainy. A coarse, coarse mouthfeel but scary drinkability. A great rye beer, I would gladly have this one again ... thanks HogTownHarry!

This ale pours a dark mahogany color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is fruity and sweet with a touch of rye. A medium bodied ale. Malts are fruity and sweet with a touch of chocolate. Hops are spicy and earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. A touch sour in the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
