This shimmering gold amber coloured beer has a light, smoked malt aroma. It’s well-rounded, with a great taste of malts and with a hint of sweetness. The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught. An original and notable beer, La Charbonnière is a house specialty. It is greatly appreciated by beer connoisseurs who have discovered a beer which is rarely seen on the market.

Pours a thin foamy head but doesn't stay very long. Has a rusty coppery appearance. Weak lacing. Smokey burnt wood like aromas right off the bat. It actually deters any other aroma I can immediately notice from it. Smokey flavours are fairly noticeable at first, then gives way to some roasted malts, toasty and bready malts and spices. Medium bodied. Pretty good.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of smoked wood with caramel malt in the background. Taste is also a nice mix between some deep smoky notes and smoked salmon with some lightly sweet caramel malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very well done with nice balance between the smoke and the malt bill.

Sampled at the brewpub, in company of S8n on September 17, 2005. Pours a medium amber colour, on the light side. The head is small and white with not much retention and minimal lace. The aroma is actually not smokey, I was surprised, being more on the Irish red ale scent and mild too. Creamy mouthfeel. Very nice mild smokey middle with a smooth finish and lingering in the aftertaste. A very nice mild rauchbier that is good for session.
