2005 Old Salty was a conundrum from beginning to end. Hints of greatness followed by some conflicts of interest. Overly sweet for my taste with a lot of caramel and fruit. A hint of the barrel aging still lingers.

2005 bottle - I've been waiting awhile to try this beer. Each time I go to my beer shelf it beckons me. But I ignore the impulse and look for something else. Well, this time I didn't ignore that inner voice. I pulled it off the shelf, wisked it into the frig and let it get cool. After awhile, I popped the cork and couldn't wait.

The beer pours out a hazy, reddish/orange color, almost something that you'd get after rinsing out a rusty rain gutter. Head was almost non-existant. A small thin head emerged from the body, but it went away really quickly. Aroma was sweet. Something along the lines of a molasses/brown sugar combo, but mostly hard to define what it was...just sweet. Flavor was pretty much the same..just..sweet. Maybe some caramel and the slightest touch of vanilla, but it was so subtle. The sweetness though was up front, large and in charge. Honestly, nothing remotely special about this beer. I know they went belly up awhile back and this being a "barrel aged" beer and all. I got no barrel qualities out of it and the beer was just okay.

Very sweet, but intriguing. This had some citrus in the aroma, and some alcohol in the aroma. Flavor was of orange and citrus, with some grapefruit and some pineapple flavors. Is that some parsely too? interesting hint of herbs. good toffee and carmel notes. I didnt find the alcohol overbearing as some others did, I just thought it was good.

This Barleywine pours a light golden brown color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized beige foamy head. Aroma is wood, smoke, fruit and sweet. Is there also a touch of salt? A medium bodied barley wine. Malts are fruity and sweet, lots of brown sugar, wood and bourbon. Very smooth taste. Touch of alcohol bite. Nice dry finish. A little funky as well. Interesting. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean, smooth and a touch dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

05.20.05 One of few 750s bottled around 01/05. First sampled this at the brewery and again a week later from a 750 and I thought it was hot. The wood aging, it seems, had really brought out much of the alcohol spice. Then again, the regular Old Salty 2004 seemed young back then, too. This is turning into one hell of a beer, one that I wish I had more of. Deep bourbon brown is the pour, while a creamy head of fine tan bubbles fades to swirling islands, lazily lacing. Mostly clear. I can’t help but plant my nose in the bowl of this glass for minutes; I’m nearing hyperventillation as I struggle to hoard every sweet, sweet perfume this magical brew presents me. Toffee and nougat with chocolate, it’s reminding me of a red-ribboned box of confections. Aromas and flavors dance in unison, rythmic balance of malty sweetness and fruitish hops. Moderate finishing burn reminds me to keep an easy tempo, to sip slowly, deeply enhale, sip again. Light touches of citrus and berry jam; mineral traces are minute but real. A body so smooth, so soft, and coating, the swallow is invited, welcome and warming. Time in the wood has mellowed this brew, accelerated its age, softened and balanced the untamed edges of a young and restive barleywine. Sublime. My new favorite barley wine, and my new favorite Heavyweight brew.

Pours with an amber-brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet, malty and oaky with a nice caramel and toffee note, and some smokey notes. The flavor is very sweet, malty and fruity with caramel and toffee notes. Full bodied and remarkably smooth.

750 ml bottle. Clear deep orange in color with a tan head. Malty nose with some slight bourbon notes. Smooth flavor. Smooth palate. Low hops. Well conditioned beer. Enjoyable. Drinkable.

Poured a hazy, reddish, burgandy color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, oak, toffee, plums, and a dry, citrus hoppiness. Sticky sweet taste, caramel, raisins, light roastiness, mild hop bitterness, alcohol (whiskey) taste in the end. More enjoyable than any other Old Salty brewed to date.
