a surprise wish list cross off that has been cellared by a friend since about 2003!!! after a tasting he busted out a 4 year old World Wide, this one (and from what i can gather this brewer doesn't exist anymore) and get this - a 15 year old bottle of 12% Port Older Viscosity. The ironic thing about this one is it is currently (barely) a top 100 beer on this site, but based on the sample I had, which obviously had some age on it but has been stored well) it's gonna drop out. Oh well. It was awesome to try, but a little muddled and unfocused. still lots of chocolate and roasted malt, little hop presence, and some warming anise like alcohol. probably better in 04-05, but I can't go back in time, so i gotta rate it like i see it.

An interesting offer from Dogwood, makers of one of my favorite barleywines ever. I've had the bottle for about 6 months and my neice's graduation party was a fine time to crack 'er open. The aroma on this was really tempting. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, black licorice, oxidation, molasses, and suprisingly plummy. Thick, black and coating would be a good description, which a 1" thick brown head. The flavor of this was a smidge oxidized, but not bad. What I got was a fantastic combo of peated malts, chocolate malts, molasses, coffee and very light rum notes. It was all very tasty and I'm happy that I got to share this with a few others who really enjoyed it too.

I have to admit, I'm not really sure what makes a Porter an Imperial Porter, nor was this beer any good. This beer poured a deep dark brown with a frothy brownish head. The aroma is definitely roasted malt with hints of caramel and toffee. Some fruitish hints prevail as well like plums and sweet cherries. The flavour was very chocolaty and for me was a turn-off. I certyainly was not impressed with this beer.

The pleasant kind of oxidized. Vinous raisin chocolate pudding and roast malt. All are strong and wonderful.
Opaque brown with a brown head.
Flavor, oh the flavors. Fudgey, oxidized, raisin. Mild bitterness.
    Rich, silky, semi sweet finish.
I have no idea what this beer tasted like fresh, but aged is really f’n nice.

Thought i would never have this one, thanks to eagle for it. Poured a dark dark brown small head. Aroma was of chocolate and expresso. MMM flavor was so perfect coffee, expected it to be thick but it wasn't, also wasn't over sweetened, very smooth. Wow darn no more :(

Thanks to eaglefan538 for sharing! Pour was dark as night with red highlights, no head. Aroma was STRONG from even a few feet away...deep rich coffee and chocolate. Smell was also sweet from alcohol and fruits. The flavor was rich, deliciously dominated by coffee, good coffee (Peche Mortel...take notes!). The sweetness wanted to come out, but was rather subdued. An oak barrel taste was underneath, which was pleasing. Also a strong burnt flavor, but in a great way. Nice, nice beer.

Poured a deep dark brown color with some red hues. The head was really thin, but not bad for a retired bottle that's been sitting around. The aroma was strong coffee, mocha-chocolate mixed in underneath, hops not very detectable, smelled like it was gonna be super sweet. The flavor was rather smooth, definite coffee up front, but over a thinner body than anticipated, much thinner, actually. The sweetness wasn't really there either (a good thing), and this had a lightly bitter roasted malt finish. As it warmed, some darker type fruits started to complement the coffe-ness, some plums and cherries, along with some notes of wood. Slight dry acidic finish also increased with warmer temperatures along with an overall oily mouthfeel. A darned nice imperial porter, and another huge thanks goes out to Bert for swinging this for me.

This was the smoothest beer I have ever had ever, like chocolate velvet with a nutty malty undertone. Dark chocolate brown with a decent size tan head. The aroma was absolutely amazing, the best smelling beer I’ve ever experienced. Lots of dark and milk chocolates with some almond scents and some heavy cream too. I can’t thank KP enough for bringing this out and letting us sample.

10.31.04 Bomber thanks to eyedrinkale, Heavywieght open house (thanks, too, to Goldtwins and Springslicker who sent me bottles I’ve yet to open). The pour is thick and black with hardly a trace of a head. Aromas are thickly roasty, very sweet, hints of butterscotch. I’m having trouble discerning this beer from an impy stout. Flavor is maddeningly sweet and quite deep. Not so much fruity as the beer is sugary. Burnt marshmallow and campfire, this brew has me yearning for a flannel shirt and propane lantern. The palate is so thick and there is so little carbonation. It’s hard to convince me this is a baltic, not a sweet impy stout. Whatever, it tastes good.

Had this on tap. Excellent beer. Not quite roasty enough for an imperial stout (after all, it’s an imperial porter), but a nice sweet chocolate with a tiny suggestion of soy sauce. Very dark with a thin, creamy dark chocolate milk foam head. Very mallty with a leafy hop lurking just underneath, mingling with the coffee. The palate has a bit of a heft, just on the edge of being chewy. Great big beer attempt for Dogwood.
