Not that impressive. Their version of a Black & Tan. Didn't work for me. Balance was overly sweet. This is a case where I like each beer better than the sum of their parts. Would rather have Yuengling's Black & Tan for probably half the price.

Mendocino Black Eye Ale 2.5 cheapdark Smells pretty nice, no hint of alky in the aroma but there is a sense of metal in there. Nice and dark, has an thin tan head that does not fade. Somewhat more alky in the initial taste than I care for. Certainly is big in flavor, roasty bitter, but no real sign of hops. More personality than most dark lagers and porters. After each slug there is this lingering bitterness. Finish is just a hair more bite than this lager lover appreciates. Average beer. You can tell this porter is 6+%.

i guess it's gotta be classed somewhere...1/2 stout, 1.2 eye of the hawk "select" ale. nice mixture, almost but not quite as good as the stout alone. like a dark lager in flavor and body.

Very interesting, and damn good! I think it’s under-rated here by a long shot. I don’t think it belongs in the "Ale" catagory, but I have no idea where else to put it. Pour is like a Porter; very dark, a bit of a head that goes away quickly. Aroma comes from the Stout; coffee and dark fruits. Flavor is dark fruits only lighter, if that makes sense, coffee and a bit of chocolate. Palate has a nice mineral feel to it which is nice, and it’s thin like a Porter yet more full than an Ale. Overall, this is an excellent blend of two styles I usually avoid which made something excellent. This is *definately* worth seeking out.

Looks beautiful, pouring nearly black with tan head, but pretty much an average stout after that. Sweet, malty, not very thick. Decent, especially for the price.

I've had Mendicino before and when I saw a bomber for 2 bucks, I had to have it. Pours a deep opaque ruby with decent rocky tan head. Laced nicely. Aroma of malts, fruits and a background note of hops. Good mouthfeel, not overly chewy, not too thin. Finishes with a bit of alcohol flavor. This might make a decent session brew, if it's a long session and the time is spent sipping, not slugging 'em back. I could see myself knocking this back for several hours.

04.29.05 Bomber. Nearly black, small tan head with lingering ring. Mild and sweet aromas of toast, tobacco, burnt sugar, and a touch pruney. Flavor is mild as well, marshmallow sweetness is spread across palate by creamy body of medium thickness. Lingering sticky sweetness and more burnt marshmallow. Balanced, soft, likeable, quaffable porter-black and tan thing. Blows the doors off 90% of the few other bottled blends I’ve had.

Pours black with ruby coming out in the light. The head is an airy foam, large and long lasting. The smell is faintly malty and the hops come across as a little stale. Not skunky, but maybe a little past their prime. The flavor is a tease. There’s just enough stout there to make you aware of what you’re missing and there’s not enough of the pale ale there to satisfy the pale ale cravings. Overall a couple of beers that would have been better had they never been mixed.

Decent beer. Not sure I like it better than each individual beer though. Nice malt/hop balance, dark beer with a big tan head. Just pour your own black and tan you'll like it better.

Very appetizing looking ale in my Imperial pint mug, very dark almost total blackness, topped by a rather bubbly, frothy tan head, that sticks. The aroma is a bit subdued but is rather pleasant and mainlly of malts, dark roasted. Thids is actually not a bad tasting beer, mostly burnt, roasty oat like flavours with a nice hoppy undertones and a pleasant alcohol sensation near the end , some faint fruitiness throughout. Very pleasant on the palate..its a very varied mouthfeel, nice. I liked this unusual ale..the first beer from this brewery that has impressed me.
