#31 Review by Chopz from Cantley, Canada

Purchased a 6-pack in Baltimore on my trip to Maryland Deathfest. Pours a real deep amber colour with a frothy warm-beige cap, good retention and creamy lacing. Aromas are malty with some sweetness and very light grass. The taste is sweet with fruity notes, caramel malts and some decent hop in the finish, creating a mild dryness. Plums, dates and other dark fruits. Hints of oranges. Not a bad brew, but a little heavy in sugars... especially for such warm weather.

Now simply known as "K-9 Winter Ale" with an ABV of 7.4. Pours a darker amber with a 2 finger head that quickly disappears. Zero noticeable carbonation. Aroma fairly mild with hints of spice, hops, and has a soapy hint to it. Taste is simply weak for the amount of alcohol in it. Barely any taste to it but what you can notice is the slight metallic taste to it. Slight spice to it as well. Burns on the way down and is fairly warming. For having as much alcohol in it is sure doesn't taste like it. texture is smooth. Not much going on with this one.

one of several winter brews picked up in seattle, and my least favorite of the bunch. pretty standard english strong ale, which means it's average or a hair better at best. dark, with a malty dark fruit flavor profile and a touch of hops in the nose. decent, but not very exciting. 2nd try...standard all around with a little more unpleasant bitterness than last time. 1st try 3.2. this time <3.

Let this one warm and everything measured becomes so much clearer. A deep mahogany colored beer with a big foamy textured, off white head rising above. Great hang time. A decent soapy ringlet and spots of clouds are left. The aroma and tasting are an intricate dance of sweet, caramel, toffee malt, tart cherries and bitter, herbal hops. Those hops are most pronounced in the flavors, but again, warmed, not in an offensive way. The body is full and creamy. The carbonation adequate.

Aroma is crisp and malty, rather typical, but with an undertone of spice. It pours a nice clear coppery amber with a fairly thick off-white head. Flavor is more hoppy than malty, decent but seems to lack the spice I picked up in the aroma. Texture is fairly smooth and a little fizzy. Not Flying Dog's best, but still a good party beer.

This one poured a dark copper color with a thin fizzy head. and showed some great lacing. It had roasted malt throughout the aroma and present in the flavor as well. The flavor had noticeable hops and that was nice for me because so many winter beers are too syrupy with the malt. The bitterness lingered throughout the finish.

I am not so sure this one fits into the English Strong Ale category, but this winter ale (as it says on the label) does have some nice qualities to it. The clear medium amber brew sits under a thin layer of sud retention left over from the bottle pour. Sweet aromas of brown sugar rule. On the buds, this light, airy brew had no real flavor to get one's attention. It was in the finish were a hop character seemed to take effect.

Pours out in a crystal clear reddish amber colour with a lasting off-white foam. Sweet and clean aroma of fudge, caramel, sweet licorice and mature cherries with floral undertones. Medium-bodied with clean flavours of blue plums, caramel, toffee and metal with touches of orange-peels and cherries. Malty long finish caramel, flowers and dark fruit but once again, the mouth-feel and the body from Flying is way too clean for my tastes. Could have been much better. Still quite decent.

Pours a medium dark brown colour with khaki coloured head. Creamy texture, nutty, caramel and pancake flavour. Moderately malt with a smooth hop finish.
