PORTLAND, MAINE (January 20, 2005)- The Shipyard Brewing Company marks 2005 with the beginning of a new tradition: Brewer's Choice Special Ale. This new beer will be available in February and March while supplies last. Each year, Brewer's Choice will feature a new, limited edition beer recipe created by Shipyard's award-winning brew house team. Every year the brewery will choose a different beer as the new Brewer's Choice selection. 2005 features Brown Ale. "Brewer's Choice honors the true spirit of brewing excellence and carries on the age-old tradition of great beer making,' noted master brewer Alan Pugsley. "It gives our award-winning team of brewers the opportunity to develop creative new recipes to bring to the marketplace.' It's also Pugsley's way of raising a glass to his mentor, Peter Austin, who founded the world-famous Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England where Pugsley apprenticed. The packaging features a line art drawing of Austin at ease in the brew house making a toast to his fellow brewers. "People will no doubt wonder about the black cat sitting on the barrel next to him,' continued Pugsley. "In England, black cats are a symbol of good luck and Peter had a lucky brew house cat named Bridget who greeted us every morning when we came into work.' This year, Shipyard will brew a limited run of 10,000 cases of Brewer's Choice. This product will be distributed primarily in New England in 6- and 12-packs as well as on draft. Brewer's Choice 2005 Brown Ale is a full-bodied, dark brown ale made with 5 different malts and 3 varieties of hops. Pale Ale, Crystal, Chocolate, Roasted Barley and Wheat malts combine to give this beer a nice smoky taste up front and a smooth, full body, finishing with a crisp hop bite at the back. Hops used in this limited edition brew are English Challenger, Styrian Goldings, and East Kent Goldings at the finish. Available February March. 5.4% alcohol by volume. The Shipyard Brewing Company was founded in 1994 and produces 13 varieties of award-winning English style and seasonal beers

While not being a fan of Shipyard, I went ahead and picked this sixer up for one, because I had never seen this brew from this brewery and figured I would give it a shot. This bottle says 06 on it but upon further research, I have decided this brew is like the 05 and decided not to add an all new brew. Preliminaryly, this brew had massive carbonation and only poured foam into the glass which disappointed me greatly. The aroma encompasses maltiness as well as sweetness with some slight hazelnut coming through as well as some chocolate and maybe some spiciness. The appearance is a rich and dark brown-hazelnut in color when held to the light with a uncommonly large head that is light-tan in color and remains taking sometime to diminish. The mouthfeel is light-bodied and smooth with a palate that is a bit creamy and wet-like. The flavor is of maltiness, some slight dark fruit, hazelnut, and maybe some slight chocolate with an aftertaste that is a bit bitter with some very faint hoppiness with a finish that is rich and smooth and very palateable. Overall, not a bad product here and better than other Shipyard brews I have had and after all said and done, not a bad brew here and is pretty solid.

While it's been fashionable the past few years to slam Shipyard..., I've never really been grossly disappointed with their wares. Stellar? Nope, not really. But I think the "buttery butter" jokes are a bit played-out.

But that having been said, I think this beer might just give this brewery's critics a bit more ammo. It's not a messy buttery mess of a beer, per se, but does have some rather cloying angles that are hard to ignore.

It does have some nice maltiness, and some roasted aspects too. Bitter enough to back things up nicely, but not in-your-face as many other beers of this style can be.

This would be a nicely sessionable quaffing ale, if it weren't for the slightly sticky syrupy mouthfeel (esp. in the backend). Some cloyingness that is a bit distracting, IMO.

So while this is not all that "buttery" per se, I tend to think that many a critic will be able to hold up this beer's syrupy cloyingness as even further evidence of Shipyard putting out 100% shite. And though I think that sort of verdict would be misguided, I can't so far as to say that this is great beer, either.

All told, workable -- I've certianly had worse.

I've never really been a big fan of Shipyard but this is one of their better one's. $5 a six pack is a very affordable price too. This pours a dark brown-amber color and topped with a nice amount of foamy head. Malty aroma with a malty, slightly sweet, toasty flavor. Notes of chocolate as well. I guess this is a brand new beer that is going to be released on a limited basis in the northeast that started February, 2005.
