Is reminiscent of the classic pilsner-style beers when strong willed pioneers were settling in the Canadian west. It's unique label with a blacksmith and forgue hints at the handcrafted quality of this light-bodied, dark Lager, with it's specialty malts, true Pilsner yeast and 5.0% Alc./vol. Small wonder it won a silver medal at the 1997 world beer championships. Black Pilsner is available in four packs (4 x 500 ml) and draft.

Drinking this on tap at Original Joe’s, not a bad little micro brew tap selection they have here. Body appears black with ruby highlights when held up to light, there was no trace of any cap by the time the waitress dropped it off in front of me. Flavors are very subtle, roast malts, peat moss, mild coffee, and the faintest touch of a bitter hop presence. Mouth feel is acceptable and after taste is clean and somewhat refreshing. Beer finishes mildly sour but the becomes more evident when beer warms up. Very drinkable beer and of high quality, it’s just lacking any real character.

This beer is aptly described as coca-cola black with a thin tan-coloured head. In fact, from a distance, it appears to be coca-cola. The aroma was very very weak. Some malt and coffee tones, but not much else. The mouthfeel was only slightly more viscous than water. The flavour was very weak with some malt hints.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color beer with a medium dark head with average retention. Aroma of roasted malt is quite subtle and no hops are clearly discernable at first. Taste is quite light with some roasted malted, light caramel but not much bitterness to be found. Body is quite thin and this generally lacks character. Not bad but nothing extraordinary either – black pilsner is probably a better description then schwarzbier.

1/2 liter flip top: pour puts a cola colored lager with a puffy cap in your glass. Moderate carbonation, sides of the glass lace well from the retained cap. Aroma is pleasant: cocoa-like tones over a sweet caramel malt aroma and light grassy notes. Creamy mouth feel. Front side is malty; roasty malts over light molasses-coffee tastes, hops are attenuated revealing the roasty sweetness, without being cloying and sit in the back until the finish which is medium in duration and leaves a nutty/roasty after taste. I like this dark lager very much. It has a hybrid quality of a thick Pilsnerized Dunkel. Uncomplicated, straight forward, mellow flavor profile, very tasty and satisfying.

DRAFT: It's black alright, no light penetrates, with a small tan head. Can smell the smokiness plus sweet and limited hops. Taste is roasted, smokey malt, but not overpowering. Similar to Guinness in that your brain sees the dark color and you expect heavy and strong flavor - but its not. Mild taste, light and refreshing. BOTTLE: Have been saving this 500ml flip top bottle for a Friday after a busy day's work. Poured into a pint glass, it looks like Coke - dark reddish, small bit of foam. Average carbonation, some lacing left, but thin and stringy. Aroma is similar to other pilsners, sweet caramel malt and light grain. Lots of flavors roasted malts, molasses, sweet but not cloying. Finishes with a nutty and smoky aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but in a good way to keep the taste crisp, too creamy would not work. Not quite as good as fresh from the keg at the restaraunt.
