Drakes Port Barrel Imperial Stout is our classic Imperial Stout that has been aged in Port wine barrels for seven months. There will be a total of four different barrels released over time. Each barrel will be bottled and corked with a different colored wax. This way you can discover the subtle nuances that each barrel has introduced to the beer. This beer is very lightly refermented in the bottle to achieve a small amount of carbonation. It would be best served in a glass of a temperature between 45-50ºF.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - Gold wax bottle. This was just insanely tasty. Nose was a little soy (in a good way), chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla and lightly acidic. Appearance was dark brown in color with a light tan colored head. Mouthfeel was slick, oily and smooth. Flavors were acidic, sour, alcohol, chocolate, sweet malts and some nice port qualities. Just an outstanding beer. Too bad they are nearly impossible to find.

This one pours a dark brown. Like the central waters stout, this one has picked up some sourness. Vinuous. Very interesting. Not sure how much of it is intentional, but interesting.

07.10.05 Bottle, red wax, barrel #2. I think there’s a pic of Barry dealing with the seal on this thing and there’s still wax on my corkscrew. Dark, cola black; thin head but lasting. Aroma is old wine barrels, musty, lightly acetic, tons of alcohol. Molasses, vinous, crazy complexities, lots of sherry and burnt toast roasty. Concord grape and lactic. Sour.

Dark brown color. Small to medium head. Aroma is chocolate and sweet. A medium bodied Imperial Stout. Malts are sort of sweet and fruity. There is a lot of lactic sourness in this beer, I think its from the port wine barrels as barrel 2 was not nearly as sour as barrel 1. Nicely balanced. But it really doesn’t taste like an Imperial Stout. Nice sweet finish. Don’t know what I was expecting, but I don’t think this was it. Interesting beer, but was way to lactic for an Imperial Stout and was missing some of those roasty and toasty qualities you would expect from an Imperial. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet

Thanks to beerguy101 for this one. Pours a dark brown color, much lighter than most imperial stouts, and had a sour milk quality about it that I didn't like. I tried both barrel #1 & barrel #2.

Gold Wax... Poured an opaque dark brown color with a small light tan head, that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of port, cherries, vanilla, roast and light chocolate. Roasted taste of light oak, port and a small alcohol burn. Velvety mouthfeel.

This Imperial stout pours with a dark browwn body with a medium thick head and some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet but mostly bitter and malty with buttery notes and a kick of alcohol. The flavor is slightly sweet yet mostly sour with some maltiness and lots of alcohol. Seems pretty thin for stout let alone an imperial stout.
