The latest acquisition “Grottenbier” was created by Master Brewer Pierre Celis. It is an aromatic dark beer with 6.5% alcohol content. In the marl pits in Kanne ( Belgium) and Valkenburg (the Netherlands), deep under the ground, you can taste the Grottenbier in a constant temperature of 11° Celsius. As it is the case with Champagne, the bottles are placed in a “pupitre” with results in an additional fermentation. This beer with a high fermentation with a second fermentation in the bottle has been pointed out as one of the best 10 present-day beers by beer guru Michael Jackson.

Somewhat opaque light ruby red with light brown lacing foam head. Aroma is caramel dominated, taste is bit sweet. Notes of yeast and flowers. Dry aftertaste. (Velp 201312)

750 ml corked and caged bottle, " Pierre Celis signature Selection ". Poured in the original Grottenbier chalice a cloudy oak-burgundy coloured ale with a one finger dark beige foamy head that had a very long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Mid-sized carboantion. Good lacing. The aroma is yeast, caramel malts, spicy, pepper, cinnamom, nutmeg and dark fruits, plums, raisins. The flavour is rich, caramel malts, spicy, pepper, cinnamom, coriander, a touch of licorice and may be a point of ginger, candy sugar, fruity, plums, raisins and grainy apples. The mouthfeel is very smooth. This medium to full bodied Bruin has a lingering spicy finish. In Memoriam of Pierre Celis. Thanks You for all Your Work !

This what not what I expected it to be. I expected a crude, unpolished diamond with little to no reputation to live up to. What I got was a grown up beer with a beautiful glass and a just as beautiful taste. Grottenbier is a nice dubbel with a dark taste of dark fruits. The sweetness before the bitternes completes it.

Oh how I love a good abbey dubbel, and this is one of the better ones. A beautiful reddish-brown colour topped off by a tan coloured head. Lots of yeast, dark malt, and spices in the aroma....almost christmasy. The flavour is a good balance between the sweet maltiness, and the bitterness of the hops and yeast.

A deep brownish-red colored ale. Nice light tannish head, frothy and robust. Settles into a nice lacing. The smell is a little off. I get yeast and fruit, like figs coming to the nose. The taste is a lot better. Molasses and raisins on the palate. The body is light on near watery. Decent drink but not as complex as I’ve come to expect from Belgium breweries. It was paired well with the seafood salad served up for dinner.

Sipped on this gentle bruin belgian during our first big snow storm of 2009. Sparkling amber~brown body with copper highlights. Billowing, rocky tan head that takes it's time to simmer down. Thick/heavy lacing surrounds the entire glass. Delicate aromas of multi-grain bread, bran cereal, brown sugar, and ginger bread. These scents are mellow and pleasantly intermingled. Mild body that is malty and sweet. Drinks smooth and calm. The flavors are very malt forward and have a nice earthiness. Biscuits, dark grains, honey and light molasses balanced out by a gritty sugar effect. Mild yeast elements play a role with fruity flavors. Calm and relaxing brew that resonates with the senses.

Grotten poured a beautiful rootbeer brown body with tons of carbonation that lead to a massive tan head that left thick lacing. Aromas of banana, cinammon, and clove. Mouthfeel was adequate, a little thin though. Flavor was strange, no one flavor stood out and it was kind of bland. The best thing about this was its appearance, however i would be willing to give it another try in the future.

Opened the 330ml bottle with a big pphhhht...nice bit of secondary in there by the sound of it. Bottle has a best before of 07 07 08. Pours dark orangy/amber, with edges of gold....off-white, big forthy head. A good lookin' beer.... Big spicy nose....cloves, nutmeg and mixed fruit. A sharp tang in the nostril too, like lemonade, or ginger ale. Some earthy, "fleshy" aromas as well. Ginger nut, musk & clove spice continues in the mouth, along with complex malts. Hint of leather, or even a fragrant smoke/incense. Has a medium mouthfeel, but finishes fairly sharply, leaving a spice perfume.

I have to say that I was REALLY unimpressed with this beer. With the reputation that Mr. Celis has I was looking forward to the tasting but it was...underwhelming. Aroma was fairly weak but what I could pick-up was corn syrup or a candy sugar. Appearance was a dark, murky brown. Mouthfeel was above average but nothing exciting. Flavors were just too average for my liking, balancing on the edge between boring and bland. I could get some yeast, some malt but it was all just too boring. I will revist this beer at some time because I'm thinking the bottle I got was bad somehow.
